Sorry sir, it's illegal. Ace hardware craziness

Looking to price out some barbed wire, and went to the local ace hardware to see what their price is. Well to my shock, they say; barbed wire is illegal!! I said it's definitely not and walked out.
Ended up going to tractor supply where they were happy to sell me a pallet of the stuff. At discount to boot.

When barbed wire is illegal, maybe some folks will stop using knifes and start using locomotives to hit soft targets. Craziness

When barbed wire is outlawed, only outlaws will have barbed wire.

What are we going to wrap around out baseball bats when the zombie attack!?!

Ace is in cahoots with the zombies! Did the employee have a strange look and smell?

I guess it depends where you live, and how it's installed.

This Reddit thread seems to have a few good points on the topic.

I guess I'm going to commit a felony this weekend when I redo the east 1/2 mile of fence on my farm. The 100 year old stuff is no longer 'bull proof'...

You only got 100 years out of it? You should contact the manufacture and demand a rebate!

And be sure to smoke a big fat hooter while installing it... because that is legal yaknow

Those should definitely be illegal...

Stretched so many miles of barbed wire it hurts to think about it. Still have my last stretching tool. Worst was the years the ranch raised Santa Gertrudis cattle. Biggest, strongest, dumbest cows ever. Had to double-post and add two strands of wire to their pastures. Still have scars from that exercise.

Reminds of a time just recently when I was on the road, stopped in at a Subway sandwich shop in Kansas. I ordered a Tuna sub and please toast it. The women said "Sir, I can't do that, it will make you sick."

"agh...what"? I said.

"Ya, it makes the tuna go bad." she said.

"So I guess all the years I've been eating Tuna melts and toasted Tuna subs I've been living on the ragged edge huh?" I asked.

"Sir, I'm just say'n it will give you food poisoning." She said.

Arguing the point would have been pointless but I have engaged in 'pointless' pretty much all my life so I asked "So just how does it get you sick?"

I can't remember exactly her comment exactly but it had to do with bacteria and Tuna and what have you. I remember her being rather rotund know-it-all.

I told her I would take my chances, ya see I live on the edge. I'm a drifter with no soul, ya see I married a Ginger and she took it. I'm soulless and look to test the boundaries of time and space...

Ya, she wasn't amused but I did get my toasted tuna sub, on white, lettuce, tomato, mayo, salt, pepper, oil, vinegar, bag or Lays and a Coke.

F U Kansas Subway...

If you think Santa Gertrudis are the biggest, strongest, dumbest cows ever you should try ranching Bison. Ok, Bison may not be the dumbest.

Around here they cut up telephone poles to use for fence posts. If they don't get enough to eat they will roam. Willroam. If the herd gets too large they can't be stopped.

Every spring I volunteer making and packing 6 to 8 thousand buffalo burgers for the annual benefit BBQ for the community college.

Those suckers are big and mean. Way worse than Angus, even. Don't even think of getting near the calves, either. And they hate barns. Totally out in the open year round. Huddled up in the snow taking turns with their faces to the weather, steaming nostrils hung heavy with ice.

Good burgers.

We (read I) have taken up all the barbed wire around our place. I grew up hating the stuff and was glad to switch to a 1/4" diameter rope fence with copper wire braided into it. 5000 volts going through it means I don't have any escapees. Of course we're fencing horses, but it's taken most of the work out of fencing. The biggest chore now is mowing under the fence line, as the horses really don't like taking the chance.
Getting rid of the wire was a PITA. I was able to give the good rolls to a neighbor. I tried to recycle the rest but was told they couldn't take it as it would cause problems with the metal shredder. I had to take it to an enviro depot drop off and pay to leave several hundred pounds of wire. Sigh.
Best
