question on porsche coa

Hello,
Per the COA application form it indicates that the engine # and trans # are needed in addition to the vin for pre-79 model years. How does that work? Do they use that to cross reference their records or just print it out?

How many of you have the coa for your cars?

Thank you

I have had my 911 for 22 years. Since I actually drive my 911 and I don't do Concours I have never felt compelled to get a COA. I remember when they first offered them they were cheap. Now that are pricey. I have heard many stories of rampant inaccuracies.

I still can't think of any reason for me to get a COA for my 911.

ROW cars are not eligible to receive a COA from PCNA, as the company is exclusive to cars in North America. The application form specifically states the document is limited to cars produced for sale in the U.S. and Canada only.

The forms in the links are a bit confusing. The opening paragraph clearly states the pre-1979 cars must include the engine number, but on the form itself, the line for engine number and transmission number is followed by a parenthetical "Mandatory for 1979 and older models" statement so it's unclear if that statement is for both engine and transmission numbers or simply the engine number, as mentioned in the opening paragraph.

As for why those numbers are requested, my guess is that PCNA wants to be sure a complete car of some sort is being queried and to record the existence of the engine and transmission for their data base should they not be matches for the VIN. I have heard stories where owners supplied the information to PCNA because it couldn't be found in their data base, as well as inaccuracies about options, but not about major components like the engine and transmission.

My cab is a grey market import. I got a COA when they were cheap. So not all ROWs will be excluded. They will answer questions over the phone and confirm any records before taking taking your money and issuing the fancy certificate.

i got one for my ROW 70 911. it was spot on accurate, and answered a lot of questions I had about the car in addition to giving me insights into options that were no longer with the car. I have never used it for a concours.

Well, either PCNA changed their policy or they do not adhere to it. I have no personal experience with a COA, just reading up on the official website. From these two experiences, it could be worth a try to get a COA from PCNA for a ROW car and see what happens. Don't forget, PCNA wasn't formed until 1984 so if one applied before that time, the stipulation for NA only cars may not have been in effect.

Interesting. Anyone been denied a COA for a ROW car from PCNA?

NO COA for me then. I don't own a fax, and probably would not remember how to use one anyway.

I got a COA for my 75 about a year ago - Didn't require me to provide anything but the VIN.

Back when Porsche believed about customer relations, I wrote them asking for info on my car. In a few weeks I got a response letter, informing me of all the info contained in a COA. Never bothered with a COA. This was when? Late 70's, early 80's, if I recall correctly. The letter is now in the hands of the car's current owner.

It is a service that in theory wouldd be easy enough to provide for free...possibly withsome proof of ownership.
I am having trouble making out my trans # which is partially why i posted.

It seems to be rather handy to prove you have orignal engine/trans.
