Bent valves? Chevy cobolt.

2.2 L 4cyl. Car towed from highway. No start. Like a mini start for one second if it's been sitting.

Chain slipping problems found as common on web search.

Pulled valve cover. Compression from passenger's side to driver's side. 0 30 60 90. My head hurts. I would think if NO bent valves the compression could be low, but would be consistent.

I am thinking bent valves. Would like some feedback before I call the customer.

Boroscope on 0 Compression cylinder to see if piston is scathed? (trying to think of another easy way to confirm before pulling head)

Leakdown on TDC should confirm if valves. Air escaping thru intake or exhaust. Bad rings will blow air thru oil fill hole. Just wondering on staggered compression if there is a chance it is ONLY timing. Other than only timing my customer will opt for another beater vs a repair.

I suppose I should get off my butt and do a little more diag work.................

Also, customer did hear ugly "noises" right before it quit. Chain is still connected.

A holed (0) piston? Doesn't explain the other low cylinders, however.
Pour oil into cylinders & check again?

If it has zero compression on a spinning test, the head needs to come off. End of story.

Actually, scratch that. Take the valve cover off and check cam timing mark against TDC mark on crank. Should have one. Then pull the head, most likely.

Replacing valves and fixing the head on that engine shouldn't be a huge deal and worth doing, unless it's truly an $8.00 car.

I wish my problems were that simple.

This is what I need to hear. Sigh.

Kind of a pimp job to the customer to tell him to junk the car without prima facie evidence even if I "think" I know.

However, I will nail timing and pull the leakdown test first.

Put a long drift in cyl 1. Rotated camshafts. #1 piston does not move. Others move up and down. Connecting rod. I could also push piston down with the drift and hand power.

The end. Thanks for your thoughts helping a lazy guy out.

Happy Easter.

Time for a small block Cheby swap!

You can get a brand new 350 for under 2 grand.

Used is even cheaper.

This car had 260k on it. Customer seemed excited when I passed the news on that it was dead.
