The future is bright.

berettafan 04-28-2017 07:26 AM

Congrats! that is just awesome! should open so many doors in her life.

gatotom 04-28-2017 07:52 AM

Congrats, awesome achievement, don't miss anything as a parent, Christmas and Halloween concerts are a must and of course the Army/Navy football game.

There are nice B&B places all thru Annapolis, miss the area since my youngest graduated in 2010 but every 5 yrs we go to Army/Navy game.

Daepp has a daughter that I believe is graduating this yr.

Baz 04-28-2017 01:11 PM

Congrats to you and your daughter, Dan.....pretty dang special.

Thanks for sharing with us - nice to see such great stories in this nutty world we live in!

Belly rubs to Sweet Olive from the girls....

widgeon13 04-28-2017 01:37 PM

Congrats to all. No better education available.

Seahawk 04-28-2017 02:31 PM

Fantastic, just fantastic.

My Grandfather and his brothers (my grandfather was a Warrant Officer in WWII, his brother's Navy Chiefs in the same dust up) on my commissioning as a Naval Officer told me the single best trait of a newly minted Ensign is a sense of humor.

She'll need it for the USNA as well, but I bet she crushes it.

Fantastic, just fantastic.

HardDrive 04-28-2017 03:20 PM

Congratulations to you and your daughter!

drcoastline 04-28-2017 03:30 PM

That's great. Congratulations. Go Navy!

Awesome! The best doorway to go through to enter a bright future!

pavulon 04-28-2017 04:22 PM

Great job, Dan! Congratulations to your family!

That said, selling your BRP remains unforgiveable.

gsxrken 04-28-2017 05:34 PM

Adventure ahead!
Awesome stuff.

A930Rocket 04-28-2017 06:16 PM

Congratulations to you and your daughter!

kghjr 04-28-2017 07:45 PM

Congratulations! Go NAVY. Tell her, just consider Plebe Summer an extreme summer camp. Pick sailing as an extra curricular. Class of '73, non-graduate.

BTW, not to denigrate or criticize anyone, just an FYI, Navy is a color, NAVY is the nautical armed services branch of the United States Military.

Btw, she may discover steamed blue crabs and fresh arsters (aka oysters) and never leave this area.

Thanks guys.
She is getting very excited about this and has been preparing for over two years now. We had good advise from Seahawk and daepp a while back.
There are a few others in our area that got in as well. My daughter has already reached out to them and they are already bonding.
My wife and I are flying out to Annapolis in June with her for Induction Day. It is going to be tough for all of us. Emma is our only kid and we are all very close. We are so very proud of her. Her future is indeed bright!
Looking forward to the blue crab and seeing the sights on the east coast. Pictures to be added for sure.

Schrup 04-29-2017 10:59 AM

That is really cool.

daepp 04-30-2017 05:47 PM

Hey Dan - congratulations again to your daughter and congratulations to YOU! No one gets to the Yard without years of groundwork set in place by everyone on your team.

As you know and as Tom mentioned, our daughter attended the Academy and she graduated last June! She service selected SWO (pronounced like S-N-O-W) Surface Warfare Officer in her 2C (Junior) year, and chose a DDG (destroyer) home ported in San Diego near us in San Diego, where they have been preparing for a summer deployment. And if you didn't already know it, if you're like us you'll be baffled by acronyms for a while!

Don't miss I-Day. Do book your room TODAY for Plebe Parent Weekend in August. Do follow all packing guidelines to a "T" (they really have thought of everything), and remember, the graduation rate is near 90% because the Navy's selection process is _that_ good. So have faith she'll do just fine, and take advantage of every opportunity to visit the yard!

Which one?

A good friend of mine's son is a West Coast H-60 Romeo pilot.

Thank you David.

We would not miss I-Day for sure. We already have our Hotel booked for I-Day and for Plebe Parents weekend. My wife has been Johnny on the spot with all of that. She is also very active on the forums too.

Yes, the acronyms make my head swim for sure. ;)

Congratulations to your daughter.

Class of 2021 Appointment dinner last night with the northern Ca. parents club in Palo Alto.
Nice photo op with the guest speaker of the night. RDML, USN (Rtd) Robert Hennegan.

It was such a great evening, and was an honor to be surrounded by such amazing people.

Update! We are here in Annapolis. A very bright and early start, 0400 wake up after not getting to bed until 0130. Going on less then three hours of sleep but excited to be here and sad all at the same time.
We arrived a couple of days early so we can all get a feel for the area. Only Emma has been here before. (Summer Seminar 2016) She said it feels like home already. :)
My girl is currently napping next to me. I think she is emotionally spent having to say goodbye to her friends and a first time boyfriend. (Great guy!) My wife and I feel bad for both because we know that her life is going to change drastically! First love is always the hardest. :(

Oh, Forgot to mention, we learned that one of our locals that we know. His son is the CO of the USS Gabrielle Giffords based out of Galveston TX. Small world! He also has two other sons in the Navy.

LakeCleElum 06-26-2017 06:15 PM

Congrats Dan. Wasn't it just a few years ago she was riding on the back of your XR600? Time flies......Enjoy...

Baz 06-26-2017 07:09 PM

Congrats and thanks for the pics and update, Dan!

Couldn't be happier for you and your entire family...especially Miss Olive!

All the best going forward and please convey our thanks to Emma for her service to the country.....GO NAVY!

VincentVega 06-27-2017 06:14 AM

Cool!

I also thank you for bringing the cool, low humidity weather, thanks!

Rich76_911s 06-27-2017 07:05 AM

Congratulations, that's fantastic.

If I had a magic wand and could choose where my kids went to school they'd end up in Annapolis or West Point. I don't think you can get a better education.

daepp 06-27-2017 11:53 AM

The beginning of a series of wonderful adventures, personal growth and more opportunities than you can even imagine. Do you know yet what Company she will be in?

And good luck on I-Day - if you're like us, Emma will deal with it much better than the parents!

daepp 06-27-2017 11:59 AM

ps If all still works like it did in the past (and that's usually a safe bet at the Academy) and if your wife wants to see her daughter/Plebe be sworn in as much as mine did, it's a good idea to have someone in your party wait just in front of the rope at the entrance to Tecumseh Court - in 2012 that was approx where I've drawn the double yellow lines.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1498593250.jpg

We had my 16 year old son at the ready, and you can see what seats we were able to get.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1498593292.jpg

Also, just down Stribling Walk, on either side, is where you get to meet your Mid after the ceremony. Bring a blanket and Shout wipes (they must stay clean) plus cold water and snacks for all.

Just give a holler if you have any questions, and sorry in advance for butting in...

Have FUN!

Seahawk 06-27-2017 04:29 PM

Fantastic.

Four years and then the Fleet.

Make sure she understands what a remarkable opportunity she has to lead Sailors, who in turn will watch every move she makes, looking for leadership and perspective.

What a journey.

syncroid 06-27-2017 04:55 PM

David, Thank you. We were right there today. The work crew were setting up all of the string lines for the chairs. My wife has been "on it" from the start. We breezed through check in, and getting our parents passes, etc. There are many that are clueless because they never bothered to read the information provided.

Paul, Emma is very much excited and ready for this. It is funny to be a fly on the wall seeing her walk the town a few strides behind. She has had more then a few side eyes from other P2B's, Mids, etc. Almost like she is wearing a scarlet letter. [emoji41] A good thing.
Pics from today. Had to do this from my phone because Em needs my computer. (The only one we brought)

Yes.
So much truth in that.

If you're not there to lead men and drive ships, you're in the wrong place. Something like that - said often, and meant.

IIRC today is I-Day - good luck to Emma and parents - it'll be a long day. And 7 weeks the changes you will see in your daughter will amaze you!

syncroid 07-01-2017 08:37 AM

We tried to get a good place to see the induction but could not. We were back behind and to the side of the right side cannon. It was okay though. We could hear it. Also, there are literally thousands of pictures from the parents group posted up. Here are some of the ones I took.
