My buddy Tod delivered his own baby last night .

Crazy hippie Tod, one of my bestest buddies on the planet . Known him since my teenage years. 49 years old, and he knocked up his girlfriend . Never married, or any kids before
The due date was 4/20 ( fitting ) but she was a week late . They were scrambling out of the house trying to get to the er last night at 10:30, and she was not making it . He delivered her right in his girlfriends driveway , next to the car . I'm proud of him . Medics showed up just in time to cut the cord, and check her over . Healthy baby girl 9 pounds 12 ounces .
I asked him if he was prepared for it, and he said " hell no, but I am quick on my feet " and it happened so fast, that he did not even time to stress about it
Her name is Lucinda Star Diminno ( LSD ) I am going to lover her like she is my own, cannot wait to meet her .

Sweet!! That's a big kid so glad it went well if a bit unplanned. Now you can call him your OB/GYN, hippie friend Tod. The world could use more people who are quick on thieir feet!

A good friend to have.

It's only fair. He put it in. He should get it out, too.

Doesn't the father traditionally chew the cord in two where you're from?

Wouldn't one need at least two opposing teeth to do that?

Don't count on it. Delivered my daughter at home 14 years ago when my wife's water broke before we could even get to the car. Kitchen was much better than the driveway on a 20 degree F morning. Talked through it by the 911 Operator with the phone cradled on my shoulder. But we (or the insurance company) was charged for the operating room, NICU (she was cold-duh), two hospitals, ambulance ride, etc. Nope, no cost savings at all!

Speaking of home deliveries and taking this thread sideways I would think there are risks in a baby not being delivered in a hospital?

For example some friends of ours years ago had a home delivery. The child had a brain hemorage due to the baby not getting a vitamin K injection. The child became handicapped. Is this sop in hospitals? Doctors please respond.

Hospitals can get it wrong to.

But there is less chance of getting it wrong in a hospital than a home delivery....

That's true but have yet to see anyone pack up and head home in the middle of labor. Yet lots of folks pack up and head to the hospital when things get rough during attempted home deliveries.

Hospitals can get it wrong, but they have all the equipment and staff right there in case something goes sideways.

If we acted like the animals that we are, we would deliver babies anywhere we were. And only let the fittest survive. But I'm glad we are more advanced than that. Infant mortality rates have dropped over time.

Cool...he was there for both the laying of the keel and the launch.
