Silly question, why is there no 911 long hood reproduction?
To answer my own question I presume because Porsche won't allow it?
I only ask because the only chance of me ever owning a 356 would be to buy a replica. I presume the statue of limitations allows for 356 replicas? I also presume the 550 and 904 replicas are such low production Porsche just doesn't bother to be concerned? Yeah, slow day here... Only ask because it would be fun to build a long hood hot rod some time in the future... but those are climbing out of my price range also. |
Porsche cannot prevent anybody building a new Long Hood from scratch.
Patents have long expired. But...If you build a new car, for the road It has to meet new regs. An a long hood simply cannot meet the new regs. Forget that. Anybody who tries will break his own back before he can get that car on the road. Or the product of his effort will not have much in common with an actual long hood. It will be a heavy pig with an eco engine. |
Are there any steel 356 replicas or are they all fiberglass?

I believe the 356 guys do it by using a VW donor and registering it as a VW. Why not do the same thing with a long hood? |

Because the difference between a 356 cab and a a FG tub 356 isn't as big. They are used for cruising. And flat 4 engines are a plenty. As are comparable suspension and other mechanical bits. Long hoods are higher performance and aircooled flat 6 engines supply is a tight market. the engines are in high demand the suspension bits are in high demand everything is. So if you want a long hood that manages to meet the same performance standards, you'll pay for it. If you just want a long hood for the shape and form There have been replica 911's... They do exist. Lookup Covin 911 Not long hoods, but if you want a POS, you can get one and make a long hood POS out of it. The shell is not the problem, the mechanicals are. |
It is so easy to make a long hood replica from a short hood that I think no one wanted to do a scratch kit. With the 356, the availability of Volkswagen donor cars was so plentiful that it was a no brainer. Only when those cars started to get old did the replicas start to get a different chassis than a VW floorpan.
When mid year cars start to get dear, maybe someone will develop a kit. There are certainly plenty of Subaru drivetrains out there. |

As for 911s, most of the really good ones I have driven were tweaked. I will never have a real 2.7 Carrera RS. That is a car that for many years held the crown as the 911 that had the most soul, and a real driver's car. Making something that resembles that drive is really not going to make the Baby Jesus cry, except maybe tears of joy. I know of guys that run 924s in preservation class concourse. Polish the inside of the exhaust, original tires... Very correct cars. I am not that guy. |

Okay getting ready to go home (working OT) and checked back here...
Thread was posted early and BC (before coffee) And no one caught "why is there no"? Why are there no! Great googly moogly I have to be my own grammar Nazi! Also spent some time searching out kit car sites and yeah there is some junk out there... but also some very cool high performance stuff available... tube frame 356's... 356's with Subaru engines, 550's, 904's |
all of the out side body parts are made in F/G for racer's
I wonder how hard a carbon fiber pan would be to make to replace a rusted out unit with metal limited to attachment points as I can't see a total new 911 being affordable unless you have a rusted 911 parts car to start with |

If you read that thread, you will see that those are only parts to make a short hood into a long hood.

THere are; they're called Singers...
If you want to build a 911 long hood, you can always buy a roller or chassis, fix whatever issues they have and then build that. I'm not sure that it makes sense to build a 911 for much the same reason as stated near the beginning of this thread. To really simplify, building a 356 is like building a sporty bug, building a 911 is a completely different animal, much higher performance and limits and cost. And you wouldn't save much money if any building something closer to a 912. The best market for a 911 repro is probably something like a singer. |

to my knowledge Singers are made on real 1990-1994 era 911 chassis |

The Cobra, 356, 550 and 904 replicas began to be reproduced at the time when those cars became very expensive and out of the range of most people. Arguably, the 550 and 904 were always out of the range of most people. Until recently, a long hood 911 in driver quality condition was still obtainable by the average Joe and Jane. Now that they are not, perhaps a replica will be made but likely with some other powertrain such as Subaru H6. angela (whose car does NOT make baby Jesus cry). http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1494254474.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1494254490.jpg |
Well Done
Great Looking car Ang!
This is an absolute...... Drop the mike, walk away situation....... Well done........ |
Now that they are worth more now there is a 911 replica. Maybe not a long hood, but air cooled era
