Nd advice with Jeep Wrangler purchase
Hi all. I'm looking for a Jeep Wrangler between 1997-2006 per advice from another thread. I found this one in CA. KKB.com says it should only cost $8000 for private party sale. Can I go by KBB pricing? I'm sure the seller is asking for more because of the mods they've put on. What would you offer? Also, is the mileage too high? WHat would it need to have done in the near future?
Thanks! http://sacramento.craigslist.org/cto/6121938027.html |

I would not even look at that jeep. waaaaaay overpriced.
but maybe that's the Ca market? if it is I'd have done well to ship mine to Ca, stayed in a beachfront hotel for a few weeks and had dinner out every day until it sold. for reference I just sold my very good condition (no rust issues, smooth running, etc etc) '99 with 105k for $7,500. This is in Md tho so again might be a regional thing. KBB is irrelevant for Jeeps.

mods? Looks basic stock to me and don't see any details on upgrades in the ad.

I recently paid $6,500 for a 2002 with similar miles and upgrades. I put another 3k in it to get it fixed up in top condition. Still, a Jeep drivetrain with that # of miles is kind of like a time bomb.
So $8,000 is good, $11K is probably a couple of K too high. Given that new Rubicon is in the $40-50K range, the prices on a good TJ are not going down.

Tires - what size are they and how many miles. If they are 33"+ then has the Jeep been re-geared? If not that is not cheap to do. Is the spare the same size or did they cheap out and not match? Tires look squashed in - so it will need a lift if you plan to off road it and that can add up to $3-4K depending for something of quality. Setup for towing - how many actual miles rolled up while being towed? Overall it looks pretty clean though. Miles are not a concern as long as the stuff I mentioned have been addressed. I would want to crawl around and under it before making any decisions. Would not expect much rust unless they went to Tahoe with it. Is this a play vehicle or DD? Make sure you drive a couple others of similar release to compare. Price is a tad high but Cali market is strong for Jeep. The hard top is a plus. Run, Forrest, run. Carfax shows 9 owners and accident/other damage. Figure out what nice ones with reasonable miles go for. This is not the Jeep you're looking for...

Get a TJ if you want more of the "old Jeep" experience. I bought a 2006 LJ two years ago. The extra length really makes a difference in ride and what you can carry - much more than I expected. If the Jeep is your only vehicle get a newer JK, not a TJ.

I don't have any regrets about the Jeep I ended up getting, but something along those lines is exactly what I was originally looking for....
