Which anti-virus suite
I currently use Kaspersky Internet Security, which is up for renewal. I use it on an HP Laptop, i7, 16gB RAM, Win10, that I use mainly for surfing Pelican Parts, some photo editing (Canon Digital Photo Professional), and quite a bit of CAD work (Fusion 360). I find that Kaspersky really hurts my laptop's performance, and have proved this by disabling it and finding the machine far more responsive.
As I am up for renewal in any case, I guess now is a time to look at other anti-virus applications. I have seen great reviews for Bitdefender, but really like AVG as it comes with really potent system performance management suite. There is also of course McAfee, Symantec and a whole host of others, but I am really trying to find one that least impacts performance. Any particular views/opinions from within in the Pelican brain trust? (And yes, I know Apple guys don't need this, but I do!)

I am using just the native Windows Defender plus Malwarebytes (run once per week).
Practice safe surfing and you will be fine.

Avast anti-virus is brilliant and it's free. Not sure about system performance but I've never heard a bad word about it.

ditto for me as well (actually, I don't use Malwarebytes, just Defender), I think for about 8-10 years.

After attempting to analyze the full group, I decided on the Webroot suite. Got a plan that covers three devices for one price. Who really knows, though. The free stuff is most likely fine.

At both work and home, Comcast provides Norton Security Suite. A virus/key-logger got through on my wife's work computer. I killed it with with Malware Bytes. The virus was smart enough to prevent downloading malwarebytes. I had to load it via a USB drive.
Since that time, I've had her running just the Microsoft Defender and she seems to be fine. I run Malwarebytes once a week to make sure.

This brings up an interesting question. At what point do you become concerned enough about the virus that you FDISK and reload?

Malware bites will get rid of most spamware, mallware etc. What really worries me is Ransomware because some of the people I support at work have been hit and if it's been active for long enough they end up losing everything. One guy in particular lost everything except his .PST file because that was always locked by Outlook after he logged on. He also infected some files on the server shared drives! That was ugly.

Bitdefender is very effective, super light on using system resources and highly rated.
Also use Malwarebytes regularly to scan the system. I also suggest scanning with tdsskiller.exe and mrbcheck.exe if you suspect a problem or just want to double check once in a while. All are free and work as well as any pay for protection like Nortons or McAfee which are super bloated and slow system resources down.

Local geek squad uses several when you bring in a computer for service........ malwarebytes finds stuff the other don't see......
I use norton and run a full scan frequently. Have had it for 5+ years and have had no issues and as for surfing, "I been every where mang, I been every where....." |
