Tesla rocket
My daughter had a reveal party yesterday in Tampa (for you old geezers like me this is when the couple reveals the sex of there baby) Her best friend's husband is a pro ball player and makes decent money. They pull up in there brand new Tesla. Of course me being my normal smartass self says "nice looking Kia ". He looks at me and my son,who just bought a Cayman and says. Put down your beer and I"ll take you for a ride. I have seen these cars before and thought they were beautiful but have never been in one. The inside is very high tech and impressive. Steve says "hang on" hits some button and floors it. My God, I have been in a few fast cars in my day and thought I even owned one. This car actually punches you back in your seat and leaves you breathless. Could not believe the acceleration. According to him it goes 0-60 in 2.5 seconds/over 600 HP/and will go almost 300 miles on a charge. Pretty impressive for a 4 door sedan that weighs over 5,000 lbs. Hope all had a great memorial day.

There's a tesla on YouTube that trolls drag strips and beats pretty much everything it comes against.
Still a fad imho.. |

Sounds great but often would you actually use that performance?
And how well will these cars age? I know that doesn't matter to most buyers but I'd imagine they would become problematic as they age. Recently I saw a high end late model Audi in a wrecking yard. It had an electrical issue that caused a fire in the dash board. Only the dash and instruments were affected & yet it was cheaper to write it off than fix it. (It didn't run but the rest of the car looked new including the interior) Why would Tesla's be any different to complex gas cars? Yea yea we need to build better and better cars but they've become too complex IMO.

I use that performance every day. The torque is very addictive.
We've had 3 teslas and sold one with more than 60k miles in 3 years of ownership. No problems. How's an Audi with an electrical related to Teslas? Teslas are different because they have no gas, no motor oil, no smog checks, no exhaust. |

I've heard that the max performance is only available the first 2-3 seconds, after that the Tesla is outrun by any stock Mustang?

Depends... How much do you value your license?
The cops are out there collecting revenue. I'd rather not contribute more than I have to.

I have a client who bought one. His previous car was a 997TT with a few goodies. He had the Tesla for about three months. He said apart from the acceleration it was the most disengaging car he'd ever owned. He now has a 458.

Haha - quit bashing that car. They are great cars for commuting, if you like that type of misery. They make the best of it - quiet, driver assist functions, and quick on the on-ramp ... I also like the fact that they don't emit anything in the area they are driven ...

I believe it was Motion who mentioned in a thread that driving an electric car was night and day different from any IC vehicle because of the lack of noise, you arrive relaxed with no stress. It sounded like the automotive equivalent of napping in a Lazy-boy recliner which is probably fine for some thing and some folks, and may never be fine for others.

I had one (Tesla, think it was an 85 something or another) try to play with me a week or two ago in the Boxster. I wasn't trying to play with him. I pulled off like I usually do (which is very briskly compared to the other 99%) and he shot ahead in a cacophony of silence. I did give it a bit more juice, but at that spot, you only go 50-80' before the road goes into an off-camber curve and the pavement there is VERY slick, so I definitely hung back in case either one of us did any sliding. His car may be fast or faster away from a light, but mine sounds spectacular and is much, much more fun and engaging to drive. There's always someone out there with a car that's faster than yours.

^I think that most car guys appreciate the sound and all the things that are bad with cars that we love. Look at most Porsches. They have a lot of faults, for lack of a better word but, we love what they do well. I drove the guys Tesla, and while it was quick and done what it should, it is quite boring. And boring won't suit most car guys for long. Certainly not I.
Then there's that dash. I just couldn't live with that laptop stuck there like that.

We all get told not to use cellphones while driving and so on. Now we have to tap on that screen and we have to look there to do the settings. No knobs, no hardware buttons that you can use without looking there. |

I recently drove my neighbor's P100D. We did some launches. Wow it does accelerate hard, but I agree with one of the comments above once you get to about 60 it feels like the acceleration curve goes flat. Tons of fun though. Battery won't last long doing that however.
