Shop ideas...........
My shop is 24 wide by 28 long with a 12 foot wide carport on one end. The slab was poured as a 24' x 40' piece with the carport floor a couple of inches lower than the rest to keep water from the carport from coming in under the walk thru door. I also used a light cream colored roof to help keep it cool in warm weather. It is insulated on the walls and under the roof. The shop has a 6/12 pitch and is 12 feet high at the center inside. It is steel frame with sheetmetal walls and roof.
Put the electrical outlets at waist height or high enough to be higher than your workbenches. That way you can plug stuff in without getting down on the floor. When I had my shop built, I had the electrician run two 220 volt circuits. One was for the a/c - heat and the other is a spare for future use. I have one 120 circuit for overhead florescent lights, two for plug-in tools, one for two very large ceiling fans, one for outside lights under the carport and one for an outside double outlet. Not fancy, but meets my needs (so far).
I also agree with two doors instead of one. Having a 4 foot space between the cars will keep you from parking the cars too close together. I used a single 16 foot door and wish I had done otherwise. Also, I have no windows in my shop. the only opening are the overhead door, a walk thru door under the carport and two gable vents, one on each end. I would rather have a more secure shop than the natural light. I can always open the overhead door if I want to let the great outdoors inside!
