Cheap '09 Bullitt Mustang

I noted no accident history or mileage listed. Reminds me to drive mine until it dies, since it's worth so little.

That is a lot of car for the money. I think we are in a new golden era of performance cars. There are so many cars out there that are reliable, comfortable, attractive and still have good (or great) performance that even a slightly unusual model like this is competing with a vast amount of cars with similar performance and collectability. It will be decades before we know what cars from this era are true collectibles. In the meantime, buy what you like and drive it like you stole it, because the depreciation curve kicks in whether you enjoy the car or not.

Well said. I should add that mine has been a well balanced driver for me with zero problems over the 25,600 miles I've driven it. Just routine service and one set of tires.

My BIL bought a new 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8 - 6.1L hemi with ~450 hp. Sadly he has driven it less than 500 miles as he expects it to become a classic someday. He spent 40K on it, wondering if that money will come back to him someday.

Tempting, similar price to my XK, but a manual gear box.

I see Bullitts listed from time to time with ridiculous low miles,,,very mint. Owners asking $25Kor a bit less. Obviously bought thinking they would become a sought after collectable. All I can do is wish your BIL good luck with that. Honestly, I think his odds of making a gain would have been better if he'd walked into a casino, walked up to the roulette wheel, and put $40K on red.

None. However, the 4.6 seems as bulletproof as the small block chevy. There are guys who post on the Bullitt Mustang board reporting well over 100,000 miles on stock engines with no problems.

The guys that I have met that did this, always chose the wrong car. They stored a brand new V12 Jaguar E-type instead of used six cylinder, etc....

I worked with someone that keeps a meant dodge four cylinder two hatch back from the 80's, bought it to store for "future value". The Japanese version, maybe will have value at some point, but pretty sure when people want to get a "dodge" a barely there four cylinder engine in an uglier dodge version of it's Japanese Mitsubishi counterpart isn't going to do it.

Paul,
When you drive yours like a sane person, like 60 - 70 mph highway, what kind if mpg do you get?

I live in a pretty rural area of WI and even my small town Chrysler dealer has a new Hellcat Challenger sitting on the lot...outside. Your BIL is hosed.

Not saying any of the new "Muscle" cars will become valuable, But you never know.

In the early 80's you couldn't give one of these away

and around 1970 this was about $9,000.00.

I think my parents first house around then was $14k. So I don't know if that was necessarily cheap.

I think the problem with some of the folks keeping the cars is that they aren't thinking out long enough. If you're 40 or 50 and you buy a car thinking that it'll go up in value, you may not be alive or give a darn by the time that it does.

My FIL has over 150k on his 5.4L equipped F150 with zero work. Except for the spark plug issues the modular V8s are pretty bulletproof.

As for collectible, probably not. Modern cars are produced in such great quantities there are very few that are rare. Muscle cars in the 1960s were an entire social movement, today they are just another car. I don't see them achieving the iconic status that you see out of the classics.

When traffic allows, I like to roll 80..that's around 2500 with a redline of 6500, 500 higher than the GT's of the same year. Slightly different cam profile. Bullitt's came with 3:73 gears, not sure of the number but the GT 4.6's had a taller rear end. Even so, I've averaged 21.8 mpg according to the car's readout. That's some town driving, two lane roads, and freeways. Really can't say how much of each. I burn premium because only Bullitts came with a variable tune yielding more power with higher octane. It was used by Ford as a semi test vehicle for a few things. Evidently it worked, because newer Mustangs have that feature.

I agree, they'll never be a sought after collectable. That's just peachy-keen by me. I made the mistake of buying a car that became a collectable. When I bought the 911S, I had no clue that would happen. My bad luck, I guess... Anyway, I think Matt nailed it. Matters not to me, because I won't be here to see if it happens or not.

I don't expect that my 03 Mach 1 will ever be 'collectible', but they do hold their value if you keep them clean and original. Many of them get trashed, so their rarity has increased.

This too. As pointed out, they can be crash cars in the hands of the young & unskilled. None of the status of the Porsche, to be sure. Ford sells lots of them because they are a good bang for the buck. Nothing more, nothing less.
Faster than most on the road, but slower than many. Huge aftermarket so you can turn one into a 1/4 mile monster or a corner carver that'll shock a new Porsche owner. Not a thrill ride but certainly not as boring as a Camry. Comfortable standard seats that even my 73 year old bones could stand a long drive in. (The Bulllitt got the leather seating used in the GT500 of the same year, so a bit different than the GT seats..more lumbar and side support.)

Not a "special" car by any means. Won't likely become collectable. I vary emotionally between buyer's remorse and an appreciation for how dead reliable it's been. So, a car that kinda fits me at this point in my life.

You brought up a point...It's difficult to paint all Mustangs with the same brush. Even new, it's a "what do you want?" thing. Right off the showroom you can buy anything from a 30+ mpg commuter car to a 1/4 mile monster to a track car like the 350GTR. Pay your money & make your choice.
