Yep, I bought that album. And later the CD. It is ripped a MP3 and it is on a thumb drive that stays in my cars. And before the audiophiles complain about MP3, my El Camino has two 3.5 inch speakers in the dash and the 911 has a 4 speaker stereo but no sub woofer or power amp. Nope, super high quality sound reproduction is not that important to me.
The Macan has a great stereo and is quiet enough to to hear the music but my wife is usually with me in the Macan so stereo volume is always low.

An incredible album that played to an incredible summer.
My summer of '67........ Graduated high school on June 15th so Sgt Pepper, just released, was being played continuously. The day before graduation everyone was in the auditorium for some sort of important information but I doubt anyone was paying attention. I felt a tap on my shoulder and it was the girl sitting directly behind me (just the cutest girl in school). She asked me if I was going to Monterey. Monterey? What's going on in Monterey? I didn't know anything was happening in Monterey. Just a big three day concert, and she was looking for a ride! Of course I was going to Monterey!!! I couldn't believe this was actually happening. We drove up the next morning in my new '67 Bug and I had no idea what I was going to experience in the next 72 hours. Needless to say I was blown away (more ways than one ;-) Tickets were a whopping $3.50! Simon and Garfunkel, Eric Burdon, Canned Heat, Janis Joplin,Country Joe and the Fish, Al Kooper, Butterfield Blues Band, Steve Miller, The Byrds, Airplane, Buffalo Springfield, The Who, Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix..... In between acts the were playing Sgt Pepper over the sound system. We were sleeping in my car at night and got to know the couple sleeping in their car next to us. They invited us up to their place in San Francisco, Haight Ashbury to be exact after Monterey. We spent a week that I will never forget. Actually a Summer I will never forget. I wonder if I would be the same person if all that had not happened those ten days that Summer of '67?

A most excellent adventure, Rob.
And no, you would not be the same person. Thanks for sharing. My summer after graduation (1973) and before cleaning toilets at university, my students (I was a drum instructor) loaded up my 1960 (I think) Ford Econoline van and drove to a convention of music stores in Indianapolis for a national musicians contest... The rest is classified. |

this past weekend, we spent sailing with my college roommate and his wife. We were roommates from 1966 thru 1968. I saw him 20 yrs ago in Crested Butte Ski area while my oldest son and myself were at a Nor-Am ski race.
it was fun going down memory lane.

I have told this story before but I'll play the old man card and pretend I forgot.
Growing up my best friend was a huge Beatles fan. So every time they would release a new album we would ride our bikes to the grocery store where they had a record section, buy the album, return to his house and play the album all the way through (both sides). I don't think we locked up our bikes while in the store either. and there were buffalo everywhere!

We rammed around on our Stingrays all day, every day dawn 'till dusk except for when we were starving to death and PB&J's beckoned or it was dinnertime. Then, right back out.
The porch light being on was the signal to come home, Now! When the streetlights came on it was the end of the day. Not once ever did we fear for anything, ever. Gangs of kids roaming the neighborhood. On foot, cuts through people's yards (with total disregard to fences) was the norm. Oh, the days of summer! |

I was 8 years old. I remember driving to Mammoth Mountain in a big station wagon full of kids. We played a game where someone said a word or phrase, then the next person would repeat it, then add another word or phrase. The next person would say both things then add a third, and so on. Then the oldest and hippest kid added, "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". All us youngsters hadn't heard of it yet, as it just came out. We couldn't remember the whole phrase and the hip kid won the game. For some reason I never forgot that.

I was 14 when it was released. I don't remember it being any different than their previous 7 albums. It was a few years later that it really seemed to gain in popularity.
