Why Are We Being Censored Now???
Other day tried to help out a fellow pelican, when I typed the appropriate place to pick up a part that Pelican didn't sell the Business name was censored in my post. WTF???
Did Google,Facebook, or Twitter buy the pelican site??? I agree it's in poor taste to badmouth a site or steer people away when your using their forum; however when the site doesn't carry the part or sells an inferior part ( glyco rod bearings for instance) I see no reason why we should be censored. This seems to be the norm lately across the Internet and I for one think it's BS. |

Agreed, it’s Pelican’s site but with everything going on lately with Twitter, YouTube, Patreon, and Google.....freedom of speech is important out here. The admins can inspect the posts and determine if someone is undermining Pelican;s business on their own forum inappropriately. Having “algorithms” doing it is lazy, and far more nefarious.

That's been going on for years for certain vendors. That's why some people spell out the vendor name differently or use symbols in the name to trick the program.

The government shall not make any laws limiting the freedom of speech. Well Pelican is not part of the US government so that is fine. It's their sandbox, and you are playing in it. There is always PM.

"It's their sandbox" -- yes that's true
Still, the building of that sandbox was significantly aided by the goodwill and talented contributions of forum contributors. Pelican now owns what is likely the largest repository of Porsche tutorials in the world. I wonder if those generous and prolific early contributors expected the new level of commercialism in the forum. It seems to me that forum contributions have been offered on something of an "open source" basis. Enthusiasts giving free advice to other enthusiasts (or anyone else who might benefit). Going forward, is there any security that the advice of current contributors will be available on that basis? Does that raise a question as to whether the forum belongs on something other than a private server? It's Pelican's sandbox, but I think any interference in the forum is bad business. Nothing said or recommended here is going to undermine Pelican. Shills for other vendors are annoying and ignored. Helpful references to speciality suppliers is, simply, helpful. Interfering with those is just Pelican being annoying. And in some cases, has probably caused forum members to start ignoring Pelican. Food for thought. Robert |

I've been on this site for 15 years and it's been going on since day 1. This is nothing new. The name and web addresses of Pelican's competition have always been *****'d out.

in an effort to remain in good standing, which I have a hard time with ive simply PM'd a poster with a suggestion of another vendor. I have noticed since wayne is no longer the shot caller the censoring seems to happen more regularly. im not sure if the names of suggested vendors are also censored in PM's or not. its never been noted as such in the dozen or so times ive done it.

If Pelican Parts is like all other organizations that afford the masses the opportunity to comment on their sites, there were a series of rules we all had to agree to (often blindly, without reading) that clearly delineate their expectations of our usage of their property. This is not the federal government. Rather this is a private company who are allowing us to use their bandwidth. They have the right and every expectation to expect us to conform to their ground rules. As someone who spent a lot of time reading and (trying) to understand the constitution of the US, you either play by their rules or you don't play. THIS IS NOT CENSORSHIP. Public shaming and political correctness is censorship. This ain't it.

Has been so for a loooong time.
Tried to start a theead once with the word b u s h in it. Couldn’t find my thread after posting. I think it was moved to PARF automatically. I don’t know if Motormeister is still censored, it used to be. EDIT: it isn’t anymore. ![]()

Private company in a free country.
Unlike a company operating in Venezuela Pelican has the freedom to set the rules provided they are within the law.

If you were really being censored, this thread would disappear.
This isn't just a vendor sponsored forum, it is a vendor owned forum. I think they have the right to determine if you should be allowed to recommend other vendors openly in threads. It certainly seems reasonable to me that you could forward another vendor's name in a PM. In any case no one's rights have been violated. In any case you get a lot for what you give. We pay nothing to be members here, but I'm sure that the forum doesn't just run itself. However, there are other forums, for those who are tired of this one. Please don't drag Pelican down. You aren't just screwing with Pelican Parts, you are also messing with the community. I have been on a lot of forums, and believe me, the freedom you enjoy here is rarely matched anywhere. If this forum was gone, many would miss it. I'm sorry if it doesn't suit you today. I'm sure many people have felt that way from time to time, but in 20 years these days will look pretty golden overall. If having a Porsche, and being here don't seem pretty special to you today, you are missing something. Last edited by DanielDudley; 01-26-2019 at 11:03 AM.. |

Whatever. I think it's pointless that they do it - as I buy most of my stuff here anyway because I really like the website interface of Pelican. It only seems to piss people off and turn them off to Pelican instead of onto Pelican. People remember this stuff - like being censored. They remember it for a lot longer than good or bad prices. They should take note of this. To me it doesn't matter. The orders I ordered on here a year ago go messed up a few times, but whatever. I believe that most people here are loyal to this site - corporate or not. If the bumping business to other companies was getting out-of-hand they should do something, but I believe most people around here are respectful and are just helping out. Pelican, as noted, can decide to do what it pleases. It owns the material and the data we post. To me, that's a fair bargain. I used to read car magazines voraciously, but now my car sickness is satisfied largely online. Reading a long build thread here, and then discussing things in near real time with the builder is way better and more informative than any magazine could be. |

To all of you who quoted the 1st amendment. read what I wrote above. I get it, private company doing what they want. I even said that above.
That said, there have been many cases of private companies doing things like this, from Twitter, Google, Patreon, Facebook, etc.......Patreon is esp pertinent. The bottom-line is they can do what they want. If they are smart though, they will stop.....esp AS I SAID...for vendors they don't carry or support. As Patreon and other show, if they persist in being the thought police, people will go elsewhere, and that will hurt their business. My point was learn from others, have real people look at these things, and do not go down that path. There are times where it makes total sense, like talking up other vendors who compete with Pelican on products Pelican doers carry. Its not always what you do, it is how you are doing it. Pelican has always been a class act, esp by having these forums and cultivating such a great community and information that everyone provides.

Don’t know if I’d even bother to explain to him what censorship really is. Classic victim mentality with a healthy dose of deep state paranoia.

This forum is priceless! Personally my car would not be what it is today without the wealth of knowledge freely exchanged on this site. If some don’t care for the regs that help maintain it, then you are free to move on.
