996 With White Smoke

I am looking at a very cheap 996 with 120,000 miles. Mechanic (assume he is biased) thinks it is a head gasket. I think it's likely worse. It's cheap, not cheap enough to walk away from if the engine is toast, I would have to fix it somehow.

120,000 miles on the car.

I think it's too risky. Anyone disagree?

Cheap enough to drop a 5.7 in it?

I have no time for the 5.7 option. I am working 'out of country'. Even the head gasket is a stretch for me right now.

If you decide to pass maybe pass on the lead here?

I might be motivated to do a drop and swap.

Can't a bad air/oil separator also cause the same symptom?

Seller says white smoke on one side, smells like coolant. He seems like a straight shooter. I think we can assume it's the gasket. Or worse.

Anyone here done one?

Car is about $7k US Funds. 1999 Cab, six speed, hard top, ugly green...

I'm totally ignorant of Porsche's water cooled engines since I'm an air cooled guy and I attempted to find an engine schematic for the 996 prior to posting, however, couldn't find one clear enough for me to understand. But with that being said, if this was an American water cooled engine, there could be a crack in the head, as well.

The more I look the less I think I should do it.

Heads crack, some can be fixed, some can't. Sleeves crack or shift.

Too risky.

Digging into this actually makes me reconsider the 996 idea completely.

Thanks, not a Cab guy.

Too bad.

These deals are usually not good enough to cover your repairs. I.e. 10k for a car with a bad engine that would be 16k in good shape. It will be wiser to shop for a well priced car that works, IMHO.

And I am with you on 996s. Every time I start getting excited about a good deal out there I start reading but then get scared, haha!

I went through this with my $5k 996. Fixing it just did not pen out , no matter what route I went. I was going in way deeper than the car was worth. If it is just a cracked head, or gasket, and you diy, you may win, but if a sleeve slipped, or d chunked, you loose .
Mine was d chunked and I just did not love the car enough to go that long on it. Sent it down the road .

Do a compression check. If its ok, probably a bad air oil separator. Bit of a pain to change on a 996 without dropping the engine.

There's a reason they tell you to buy the best Porsche you can afford! Unknown repairs can be scary expensive.

Ya know you'd never have that specific problem with an air cooled 911! : )

Bad bad idea. Could be way worse, and you don't have time to deal with the best case scenario. These cars don't have huge upside unless you get it for free. Walk away, it's not worth it.

If its a head gasket, you can check for intermix in the oil/coolant. AOS will cause smoke as well as oil being to full, etc. but unless you know for sure, could be an expensive mistake. Those things are easy to fix though.

AOS will mess with the MAF and render the car a stuttering Christmas tree warning light nightmare. That said I agree with those with experience and say walk away.

Yuk. Not a desirable car and a loser even w/o all cards shown.
