Who wants a split beetle?

I have a Beck Spyder lined up to buy, once I sell my 1950 split window beetle.

Is it OK to ask here? I'm giving Pelicans the first shot at it before I officially list it.

Tobra 06-14-2017 08:43 PM

Is it kind of rusty? Maybe you can sell it to Thom.

porsche4life 06-14-2017 09:05 PM

Better question is who can afford a split? I'd love to have one but I bet it will be pricey!

OK, here's the scoop.

1950 Type 1, pastel green. No rust. Matching number engine. It was in heated storage, as in showrooms at Carlson Porsche, then Boardwalk VW , from about 1965 to 2015 - 50 years. It has had no work done on it since 1965, except for some mechanical work, such as new brakes. My father had it at his VW dealership since 1985 and I took it to shows once in a while.

It looks like Carlson Porsche in Palo Alto refurbished it in 1965 to make it presentable. It runs great. The interior is very nice. It has patina, and some incorrect trim and other parts. After all, in 1965 they weren't looking for originality. Correct parts can be bought for about $3000.

The rear end has been pushed in about a quarter of an inch, as made evident by the slightly sagging rear bumper and uneven gap around the deck lid. I never knew this until last week when a seasoned collector looked at it.

I could go on. It has a somewhat unique history. The odometer reads 57,000 km. It probably turned over once in the 15 years it was driven.

I will probably be asking $40K.

Interesting dash, those shelves on either side? I like it.

Nice car, makes me smile.

That's a nice car; I just sold my '52 a couple of months ago for 30k.

IMHO - between the split and the Beck, I'd keep the split.

MikeSid 06-15-2017 08:05 AM

Is it weird if I want to smell the interior?

As a little kid, I grew up riding in my older brother's and sisters' Beetles. 4 of them, from 66 to 70. One had a Flintstone floor. Another a really horrible Maaco paintjob. But the interior of each one smelled identical. And looking at those pictures, I can almost come up with the smell.

And no...it wasn't MJ. Although my brother did find a "roach" in the glove box when he bought it and my mom overheard and thought the car had bugs.

Baz 06-15-2017 08:26 AM

Nice Calla Lillies! :)

scottmandue 06-15-2017 08:36 AM

Nice car!
So, are you buying the Beck out here in SoCal?

pwd72s 06-15-2017 08:39 AM

Post this on the early 911S board, where they love to discuss how much their cars are worth. More money there than here, as well as more likely somebody who would want to buy.

Don Ro 06-15-2017 08:47 AM

Nice color combo. Love the cream.

I bought a new '67, 1500 cc, blue VW in late '67...in Modesto, CA - I was in the military...21 yrs. old.
Talked the dealer into swapping the black interior out of a '67 red VW...door panels as well...for the light grey in the blue car.
OTD price: $1,777
Dyed the headliner black, chromed Porsche rims, and an EMPI extractor exhaust. Was considering a Judson blower.
Loved it...my 4th VW.
.
Then in Jan. of '68 a woman made a left turn in front of me during a snow storm in N. Dakota, and I slammed head-on into a bridge abutment.
Totaled the car...so the local VW dealership said.
Local VW dealership traded me straight across for an older two door Pontiac...mint condition...nice car.
A month or so later, I saw the dealership owner's kid hot-rodding around town in my VW.
I was naive in those days.
.
OK, back to the splittie
.

Not weird at all. The sense of smell invokes strong memories.

When I smell Lavender I think of a lady I was dating when I first joined the Army. (She used Lavender soap)

A split-window or early oval beetle smells different than the later cars.

The really old American cars, '40's & '50's had a distinct aroma...upholstery or mohair headliners?

Really? This is the Spyder:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1497551261.jpg

I've had the split for 30 years. Time for a new toy. I'd love to keep both, but that's not possible.

An acquaintance bought a Beck Spyder... apparently if you push them too hard they spin like a top so be careful out there.

Same guy was going to sell after his scared the heck out of him... but I still see him driving it around so he changed his mind.

Indescikov 06-15-2017 11:07 AM

So where is this bug located?

I'll stop wondering about snow-blowing that driveway now.

Years ago I saw one with a 964 3.6L in it

Me too. Split will be worth way more in the future, and harder to replace.

Plenty of kit spiders out there, they make more every year, no new split window bugs.

Tobra 06-15-2017 12:38 PM

^this^

You can buy a Beck 550, they are not making any split windows.

widebody911 06-15-2017 01:26 PM

^this^

You could buy a Beck any day of the week; a nice brezelfenster, not so much.

About 5hp more than needed to get out of it's own way....

Shaun @ Tru6 06-15-2017 01:42 PM

While your Beetle is beautiful, if you aren't driving it and don't plan on it, I'd get the Beck, but only if it's $20K or so and much more importantly, you will drive it.

I guess I'm in no position to judge. I rarely drove my '52, so I sold it and got a (real: :p ) 356A, which I now drive all the time (ask Tobra - he's seen me)
