Dog Carrying an Egg

My wife decided to do a test on the dog. She read somewhere that you can test a dog to see if they have a soft mouth by having them carry an egg. She tried it out. Gave him the egg, he ran around with it in his mouth, did a few laps at a gallop, then set the egg down in front of her, intact. There is no way I would believe this if I did not see it myself. I guess I should have done a video, but it did not occur to me until after. He looks like this, about 90 lb, decent set of choppers on him.

Why would someone need to know if their dog has a soft mouth?

My labrador had a soft mouth too.

He used to run full speed through a field and when a sparrow sprung up out of the grass in front of him he would grab it in his mouth and bring it to me unharmed for me to let go.

Good trait for hunting dogs. When a Retriever "retrieves" your ducks/geese/pheasants/etc., you want them to be intact.

Glad you explained that. Thanks.

softys

My Labs have the 'soft' mouth and could no doubt carry said egg undamaged --but given their track record i think they might just eat the eggs - Mine once ate 18 eggs -raw- shell and all

Just sayin

That is pretty darn amazing.

Vet says based on his markings, he has German Short Hair in him. Don't think he will ever be a gun dog though, or a water dog. He did turn the rats in the woodpile into rag dolls.

I'll often reward my dog (7 year old male Vizsla) by throwing him a treat for him to jump up and catch (a small piece of steak or chicken), which he obviously devours quite quickly! But every once in a while I'll trick him just for fun by throwing him a small cherry tomato or even a piece of spinach, etc. I'm amazed that he will appear to chew it for sometime, just to try and figure out what the hell it is and whether he should eat it or not....he then drops it on the floor completely intact with not so much as a bite or chew mark on it! Ya that is some soft mouth I'd say!

Good boy Bodi!!

We had a cocker spaniel that was bred from champion hunting lines, but never trained.

She'd go out to the pond, grab a new hatched baby duck in her mouth, bring up to the porch and drop it at our feet.

Rather confused the duckling, and then confuse her when we'd take the duckling back down to the pond and reunite it with momma duck.

Vizslas have a soft mouth. Here is my pup at 14 weeks old, jumped on a Chucker, picked it up and carried it to me, alive. Just a little slobber on the bird.

Good looking Pibble you got there! (that's what our humane society friends call Pit Bull's - it makes them sound more cuddly...)
Affectionate, loyal, damm smart breed. When we get another dog, it's the hands down choice.

This guy is the most affectionate dog I have ever seen. Has a good nose for sketchy characters, but seems to just assume that the only reason regular people are out walking around is so they can pet him.

You have to teach them to not use their teeth so much, just a little.

This is teetering teetering on a precipice isn't it?
