Amazon trying to buy Whole Foods

And apparently, shaking the grocery industry pretty heavily.

Amazon to buy Whole Foods for $13.7bn - BBC News

Just a few tidbits from the article.
Quote:
Online retail giant Amazon is buying Whole Foods in a $13.7bn (£10.7bn) deal that marks its biggest push into traditional retailing yet.

Amazon, which has long eyed the grocery business, will buy the upmarket supermarket for $42 a share.

Investors greeted the deal as game-changing for the industry, sending shares of rival grocers plunging.

But Whole Foods, which had been under pressure, climbed.

Whole Foods stock soared 29% on the news. Amazon shares closed up 2.4%.

Shares of other supermarket chains took a beating. The industry has already seen significant consolidation, with smaller players wiped out.

Kroger shares fell more than 9 %, Target plunged 5% and Costco Wholesale Corp. dropped about 7%.

Walmart, which announced its own $310m deal to acquire the online clothing company Bonobos, slid 4.7%.

The reaction spread to companies in Europe. Dutch retailer Ahold Delhaize fell nearly 10%.

Mr Saunders said the deal is "potentially terrifying" for other companies.

"Although Amazon has been a looming threat to the grocery industry, the shadow it has cast has been pale and distant," Mr Saunders wrote. "Today that changed."

I heard that with the stock price bump Amazon got today (from this news), it was enough to cover the cost of acquiring Whole Foods! So Amazon kinda got Whole Foods for free!

Aldi is spending big bucks and so is Lidl to expand their presence in the US market.....
https://www.forbes.com/sites/timworstall/2017/06/12/aldi-to-spend-3-4-billion-making-americans-very-much-richer-just-like-walmart-did/#577f826d69f8
I can get a dozen eggs at Aldi for 79 cents. Good deals on their other brands too.

Wal Mart was the 300 pound gorilla in the grocery market. Now Amazon is the 900 pound gorilla.

"Jeff Bezos said to Alexa, 'Buy me something from Whole Foods,' and Alexa bought Whole Foods."

Also with the bump in stock price, we got it fee wth nice little kicker.
After its stock pop, Amazon will get Whole Foods essentially for free

Everyone is all agape about Amazon buying whole foods and they missed this more insidious little nugget: Amazon has patented a way to prevent you from doing price comparisons in the store. It's really nothing more than a standard wireless MITM attack.

I thought it still had to go through the shareholders and the antitrust regulators before it is final.

Approved by the board is all it takes.

I don't think it would be a big enough share of the grocery industry to be put in front of the antitrust boards.

Meat, fruits and vegetables at my doorstep in 1 hour. Why not?

Might be expensive though at first until they figure out how to cut costs... Whole Foods isn't known to be for the price-sensitive customer.

On their in-store WiFi...

I'm guessing that WHolePaycheck shoppers have their own data plans. But still, a patent on that? --yeesh.

I would not be the least bit surprised if IMSI-catcher devices, aka "Stingray", came into more common use just for this purpose.
