Well, the pre fight hype seems to be working well. I have to wonder how many here will pony up to watch? Whatever, I won't be one who does.

Some speculation that it's scripted;

The winner is the one with the YUGE payday.
My prediction? They both win! |

I'm not an avid watcher of either, but I have noticed something. In a lot or most of what I've seen of MMA, when there's a punching game, it's at least one of the guys, sometimes two wildly throwing punches that aren't straight like a jab or a right and they aren't guarding their face. They are often, usually letting the other guy hit them back in the face/head, betting that they can land more punches until the guy stumbles or gets knocked out.
It seems to me, that letting a pro-boxer pummel your face hoping that in the mean time, you're going to catch him with a good punch to the chin and knock his ass out is asking for trouble. I assume there's a reason that boxers protect themselves from getting hit in the face/head. Also, boxers usually don't throw the crazy swings from way outside where your opponent can see them coming. Also, if a boxer does let you swing at his face like that, he's probably guarding his face/head with his gloves. Yeah, I don't know near as much about it as some of you or maybe even most of you, but an MMA guy in the ring with a good boxer under boxing rules seems like he's going to get his clock cleaned, especially if they haven't been given the directive of "play with each other, drag it out and make it last a while." |
For me this would be a much more interesting match if some MMA tecnics were allowed.
Say elbow strikes and knees while in clenches . Something to even the odds. That still might not make that much difference, as Mayweather is so elusive as a defensive fighter. I agree that for a fighter of other disciplines to fight a pure boxer in straight boxing rules is quite a handicap. Still, there are some good boxers in MMA. I will not be paying to see this fight, it'll be available to see free shortly after it happens. Cheers Richard |

. All of what I hear being said about Mayweather has to do with his past...not as he is today. Like I said, if this will be a serious bout I would guess that CM will hold his own. CM has reach, quickness, timing, precision, and power...and is extremely elusive. I also think that it's all about money and CM would be willing to lose...for the money. The real losers with be those who put up $$$ to watch. . "Timing beats speed, precision beats power." - - Colin McGregor . PS And CM can take a world class punch!!! . . Again, we can only suspect that some agreement (fix) is at the core of this arrangement. |

Dr. Higgins and others are correct. FM will destroy CM so effectively as to border on obscenity. Lighter, thinner gloves will only exacerbate the outcome and increase the chances that CM will suffer permanent injury. I may wait until after it's over to decide whether I want to watch it. I like boxing, but this may be something I don't even want to see.

Here's the thing; are those MMA guys tough? Good god, yes. You have to be tough as nails to even make it past the smokers, (club fights), and actually get any pro fight in the cage. All of these guys are trained in at least one or more martial art as Rod points out.
Thing is, there are a lot of tough guys out there. I had an uncle, (dad's older brother), who was just a murderer w his fists. When he was 16 years old, he was beating up tough guys in the roughest bars in the bad part of town, etc. This thread has me thinking about him. When my dad died a couple years ago, we were cleaning out his house and going through old photo albums. My sister was looking for the photo of uncle Pat, we had all seen it as kids, of him fighting for the heavyweight title of the US Army in a boxing ring set up on an aircraft carrier in about 1951. Prob Korea, my dad and him were in the war. He lost but you have to imagine how tough he was @ 180 lbs making it to 2nd place. I'm about his size and any of the guys he fought would have put me to sleep immediately, without a doubt. :) Anyhow, he went on to live a great life and retired as a police Lieutenant and detective after 30 years of service in Minneapolis. I posted his obit 10 or 12 years ago here. My point is that his ranking as a pro boxer at the time would not have been in the top 200, I'm guessing. But he would have knocked CM into next week. He would have taught him a lesson that he'd never remember. :) |
I'm surprised that so many here think that MMA fighters have no boxing skills.
And are defenseless against a boxer. In some MMA fights it's the main style that carries the bulk of the fight. I'll admit that a pure boxer will have more experience at boxing, but that is not to say that MMA guys are slouches at boxing. We have all watched Mayweather do his slippery dance, but C M is quick, moves well, and has power in his striking. And is in his prime. I'm rooting for CM, Still I won't be too surprised if he loses, the set up is totally in Wayweather's favor. I didn't care for his style of fighting even in his day. This thread will probably boost the viewing audience a bit. Ill be interested in the post fight chat here. Cheers Richad |

You have that backwards. Boxing gloves are meant to protect the hands and allow you to hit much harder. Its actually safer for the opponent to be hit with thinner gloves. |

Poor dude went up against Couture....never had a chance. I think a wrestler is actually a much better candidate for MMA. It just takes way longer to develop a ground game and take downs vs. strikes.

Really silly video in link below exposing what the so-called press tour really was, a circus show.

That is the most articulate I've ever heard from James Toney. I bump into him at the cigar lounge once in a while, and hate asking him to repeat himself. If I didn't get it the first time often a second of even third time isn't going to help. Gotta have really good ears I guess. JT is slimming back down for something, trains everyday. He may have retired from boxing but expect more exhibition fights from him by the looks of it. |
Yes, a pro boxer is going to lose a wrestling match w a pro wrestler. Or a judo match against a judo master. The CM vs FM fight would be a pure boxing match, right?
Couture would not have done too well against JT, (or any other boxer), using boxing rules. UFC started out great as a contest between different martial arts w the Gracies offering to fight anyone for big $$ and never losing(?) They were demonstrating that Gracie JJ was superior to all other martial arts. The fights were awesome as hitters tried to get in a quick knockout or at least disabling punch or kick before going down and never succeeding. They are true masters of their craft. The fights were exciting for a while because you really didn't know if someone might beat them. Eventually it became clear that no one would. There are no more Gracies or anything close in MMA. Generally speaking, all of the fighters use the exact same skill set and style and all are sort of fighting ombudsmen, trained in grappling and boxing or kick boxing to a certain level. Almost all of the fights are like bar fights or street fights that start out trading punches until someone goes down and then it's a ground fight. Never w great grappling or punching though, in fact the boxing part is always pathetic. I've seriously seen better on the street. Are they athletes trained in a sport? Yes but I'd rather watch paint dry than their "sport". I just tried to watch a compilation of "greatest KOs" of MMA on YT, it was mostly guys getting kicked in the head and then the kicker dives on the unconscious dude and starts pummeling his head until the ref pulls him off. Absolute fking garbage. People never even did that in the alley behind the bar where I'm from. The punches are thrown from bums. No one has any defense whatsoever from the flying foot or fist. I realize that boxing isn't what it used to be w the likes of Mayweather in the game but I'm old enough to have seen the greatest of all time in their prime and plenty of just amazing fighters. This is a sport: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3PPhyBUsxaA Imagine CM trying to throw hands w one of these guys. Yeah. |
It would be interesting to see the world class wrestlers at the top of their game in a MMA match. There speed and abilities are amazing. Google Kyle Dake and Jordan Bouroughs for great match (S). MMA seems like cock fighting with really, really good athletes, just not the best. Maybe the karate guys start off dreaming of being the best in MMA but as far as Boxers and Wrestlers go, I don't think any train with the intentions of being MMA fighters. More likely some go as far as they can go and then make the transition, most just most retire. Kudos to them that make the switch, there are certainly easier ways to make a buck.
As far as this fight, Mayweather should pummel McGregor. I just cant imagine how CM can corner FM. Hey, anything can happen. Lucky punch, bad judges. I won't be paying. |
