Across the I-5 about 1/4 mile over the hill from my "old" house, sold it last week and am renting back for a few more days. I did buy renters insurance for 30 days for something like $20 for $100,000 of contents insurance. (No schit, $20) I figured I could get the original artwork and family heirlooms, which are already boxed in the big a$$ RV in about 20 minutes if I had to. Thankfully, it didn't come to that.

What numbnuts buys a wood house at the end of a box canyon with 100's of acres of wildlands and brush in SoCal, Answer, me 20 years ago.

This just reinforces that while moving sucks, its time.

I have no illusions that this house will burn to the ground someday due to wild fires, it looks like I just won't be living here when it happens.

That's great for you Hugh. I hope you skip the irony of getting in a serious fire after selling the house and before you move. We've had a number of brush fires pop up lately, but none serious so far. My wife told me one of the residents in the area was complaining fire insurance went up 76% through the State program for those who couldn't get insurance otherwise.

There are about 14,000 people displaced from their homes in British Columbia due forest fires now. I cannot imagine the pain of losing a home to fire. There is a lot to be said for renting as I would not get so attached to a home.

You have done well Hugh and now you are moving on. Splitting your time between down east and California will likely enhance your appreciation of the diversities of North America.

Some good things about this side of the country... the ground doesn't move, the air doesn't spin around in a funnel and brush fires are very rare.

I disc the hell out of our property in order to avoid fire. In a year like we've had, it means discing 40 acres probably 7-8 times. "Discing" is using a tractor to pull a farm implement that tills up the ground, and leaves clean dirt behind. When the alternative is to potentially burn several people out of their house, I find the neighbors to be cooperative with the noise and airborne dust.

People change. They might like the clean air, and an insurance check!

Everything is fine, the brush fire was apparently started by some 20 y/o with a smoke canister at the nearby paintball range.

I'm up at 4:25 AM due to a sort of panic attack, about moving. Not a big deal, until I open a few cabinets and say to myself, "OMG, I still have to pack that stuff as well, or throw it out"

Sounds like a good time to be getting out. You will be a lot happier when it's done.

I realized about 10 years ago that I had way too much crap. 8 1/2 years ago I quit working full time so I could devote more time to getting rid of it all. I've gotten rid of probably two dozen cars, a dozen or a dozen and a half motorcycles, a couple dozen watches , probably 50 cameras and lenses, roughly 3000 pounds of books, 4000 magazines, and at least another thousand or so of miscellaneous things that I had accumulated over the last 35 years. For the most part I've sold them one at a time, and let me tell you it has been tedious. My house (4000+ square feet) is still full to the gills, although I've finally been able to get rid of the storage facilities I've rented over the last 20 years.

It's astonishing to think of how much crap we think we need and I look forward to the day that most of the rest of it is gone, too. I can't say that there are very many things I miss on a daily basis.

Once you leave that house for good, you're going to have a great weight off of your shoulders.

My son dreads the day that he will need to clean out my basement. I'm not gonna do it!
