You probably don't see them because they are nocturnal. I very rarely see one around here (near Dayton, Ohio) but at night when they howl it sounds like there are hundreds of them. Sometimes they sound like they're right outside the house.

We have them here in Western NY, Hear them howl all the time. Love to hunt them at night. Shoot quite a few every year with no dent in the population. Saw one last summer that was the size of a big German Shepard! They say some of the ones around here are mixed with red wolves from up north in Canada. They come south in the winter over the ice on the St. Lawrence river.

If you do a google search, you'll find 2 slightly different maps. The main difference is how much of Canada the maps say have them.

The main difference is if they put the coyotes all of the way up to Hudson bay or not.

We have had them confront people just before dusk in a local dog park. No attacks but they were sizing up the dogs for a meal. Out at my other house the neighbours get together and make sure the numbers are kept down. All I know is you have to leed them quite a bit when they are running flat out.

I saw a very healthy one this week trying to cross I-20 in western South Carolina. Walked out of the brush, looked at the rush hour traffic, turned around and went back.

Thirty years ago when we moved into our neighborhood, I would hear them all the time when I went out jogging in the evening or early mornings. Since then, with all the urban sprawl that has inundated the county, I no longer hear them. Still plenty of other critters like deer, bobcats, cotton tails, raccoons, possums, alligators and recently, feral hogs.

Just spent the weekend in Pedro at wife's parents house. We had our little maltese/terrier mutt with us in the bedroom and about 2 in the morning she started freaking out. There were two big coyotes right outside the bedroom window prowling around.
Scott....this is on Santa Cruz just above Western and they are coming down from PV and are NOT afraid of humans at all. They have been spotted on Gaffey and 1st street!

We live in the desert and see them here all the time but there is definitely a problem when they are everywhere in the city.

I was sitting outside with my parents eating lunch on their patio set in Scottsdale a few weeks ago and I heard footsteps in the gravel. I looked up and saw a good sized Coyote just basically trotting on by. I didnt even see him look our way but he was no more than 20 feet away from us. He just kept on going cutting through backyards until I lost sight of him.. Very common in those parts to be seen at any time of the day!

On the trails behind my I haven't seen any coyotes, even though there are large numbers and packs in my area. I'd walk on the trails with my dog and seen mountain lion tracks many times, and one evening I heard the loud screeching sounds of two large cats mating. Last spring there were a half dozen deer kills thawing from the winter. But, the year before there were a dozen. Also, on on creek a moma bear has a couple cubs each spring and a large handsome male is occasionally, seen near another creek. But, I haven't seen any coyotes until this summer when I spotted one leap from the sage brush on to the trail in front of Katie my 3 year old Carolina Dog. I was afraid the coyote would lure her to the pack and I yelled at her. But, she took off like a bolt of lightning and attacked the full sized coyote, about her size. And as I got about 10 yards away, the coyote escaped. Then she got him again in the sage and was destroying him. I ran into the sage and as I got close the coyote escaped. Katie ran through the sage brush, leaping over the brush with her ears pointed and head high above the brush looking for the coyote which was long gone and I was able to catch and leash her. She was wouldn't calm down so, I took her back to the house. Anyway, Katie is my second Carolina Dog. My first one would destroy full sized raccoons.

I figured the reason why there were no coyotes was because of the mountain lion. Late last winter a rancher had one kill some sheep and shot one. I'm thinking that might be why there was a coyote on the trail. However, I' m sure there are more mountain lion.

At least a dozen live in my backyard. 18 acres, butt up against another 1,000 acres of wild lands. Moving in two days.

I hear em' nightly and sometimes I hear their meal crying and screaming as the coyotes are having their dinner. They come up to my backyard sometimes. I'm start to see big ones around here. The one I saw was about 3/4 the size of a German Shepard.

Went to visit my g/f in Phoenix one dark night last year...a condo complex of 12 units with a driveway down the center.
Trotting down the driveway was a long legged Coyote...I sped up a bit and it ran to the back dead end where the dumpsters are and I watched it scale a 6 foot cinder block wall.
Saw another a few months ago in a Scottsdale dog park at 10 AM...just standing there in the open...looking around.

They are everywhere around here. Where once in a while I would pass one on the road just before dawn I now see them 24/7. We keep our Maltipoo (Scout) close in hand these days.

Hell if I'm not mistaken a yote took out Todd and his Multistrada. Todd went on but the bike didn't survive the encounter.
