Coyote's - are they everywhere?
I remember when a coyote got Joe Bob's pup.
Two deer hunters "assumed the position" in my shop today with a stocked fridge. I asked "How far east do coyotes live". I got sent to school. They said the Akron area is overrun with coyotes. Why don't I see them?

They are sneaky, and yes, they are pretty much everywhere, including some urban environs.

I split time between the S.F. Bay Area and the Sierra foothills. See scrawny ones in the hills of the Bay Area and healthy fluffy big ones in the mountains.

I was the same way as you Bob, I had no idea they were even in our area. I had this customer who was from Alaska, and he was a devout Coyote hunter/trapper . He had this really cool 1980 f 250 that was his hunting rig. We did a bunch of work to it for him He said this place is crawling with them.
I have spent a good amount of time outside in my life, and have never seen one in the area until recently .

I live at the southern most tip of Los Angeles a block from the ocean, lived here 55 years. Never saw them (doesn't mean there weren't there) until a decade or so ago, now they have been spotted strolling down the streets of residential neighborhoods at dawn/dusk.
Technically I still haven't seen one but my wife was pulling out of the garage and saw one in the alley.

There was a recent deer cull because they were over-running even the downtown neighborhoods. People aren't used to urban deer in the streets.
Saw three rabbits on the walk tonight. They just sit there and my critters walk past five feet away. Lots of them in this neighborhood, starting last year. Haven't seen any raccoons, skunks, or possums but the dog sure is interested in smelling the sewer grates. When the rabbits start disappearing, I'll start getting worried about the cat. |

Probably the coyotes are following water such as a stream or flood channel. Water usually means food. We have had foxes in our area, which I think people may mistake for a coyote. I can hear both at night, but rarely ever see a coyote. A small red fox lives in the field out back. If it was a grey fox, then I'd shoot him with a pellet gun to get him to move away. I have to protect the cats. One interesting thing is that no matter how many owls, hawks, foxes, and cats we have, the dang mice and rabbits never seem to go totally away. The ground dwelling birds have been all but eliminated.

I've see them all the time. Driving at night. I'll see them crossing the road. Down in Tucson you'll see javalina darting out in front of you. I've whacked a few with my truck, but the ****ers roll and start running back to the desert.
Back on topic. I'll constantly warn my neighbors that it's not A smart idea to leave their cats out overnight. Of course Coyotes snagged a few. Best part. Neighbor kept getting a replacement cat for each one that went "missing".

This spring had a couple of rabbits that would sit in the front yard of an evening. Now there is only one.
Same thing with opossum in the back yard. Seen a momma opossum carting around 3 babies along the top of the stockade fence this spring. Lately have only seen one smaller than the Momma by itself. There is a Great Horned Owl that roosts in the top of the big cottonwood in the middle of the back yard. Haven't actually seen it, but can hear it hooting at about 11pm. While my Golden was a little puppy, always went outside with her at night if she had to go. Puppy has removed a lot of grass snakes and lizards, but hasn't brought me anything else...Yet. Does a lot of sniffing where the rabbits go thru the stockade fence. Other goldens I've had brought me birds, squirrels, and rabbits. One brought me a opossum playing opossum once. Got it away from her and both of us inside before it came to and ambled off. Haven't seen any evidence of any other varmints, predator or prey.

The Wiley Coyote............
Yep, we have them down here in South Georgia also. Any area of undeveloped woods is likely to have a few. There have been several killed not far from the subdivision where I live! On the other hand, we also have a family of wild Peacocks that live around here! When they get noisy, it sounds like someone/something is making a child scream! Very spooky when you first hear it!
