and the difference between a 99% eclipse and totality is (not meant as a pun) night and day.

The last tiniest sliver of sun still packs a wallop, and when you hit totality...well, it's hard to explain. The change is almost overwhelming.

Do yourself a favor and try to catch the next one...fastest 2 min and 14 sec ever.

This was the last sliver I caught before totality and it was still bright:

Not much coverage here in AZ. This was about it.

If we had been in an area of totality, I would have bought one of these!

Gear 360 - 360 degree camera. It can capture 4K video (360 degrees) or 15MP pictures!

That would have been great to have...one of the things I wished I'd have done was have a camera to take pis of the panorama during totality, folks watching, etc.

I think I'll mosey over to Austin in April, 2024 and visit a cousin there. And check out the music scene...

Some hottie said it was the best 2 minutes of her life. She hasn't met me yet! lol For me, it was about 7am, so I was still in bed. I did see the last one in '91 from my office.

just got back after 2000 miles on the road over 4 days in a new mustang convert rental car
got a low rate on line but the rental location was out of normal cars so I got the mustang
for 30 a day, that DI v6 really has some power avg 85 and got 25+mpg hit 120
nice fast drive thru the MTs

saw the totality in western NC it was spectacular and worth the time and effort
a bucket list item checked off

good luck on the roads until we got back near I95 on I26 in SC late monday
I95 was jam full and stop and go SLOW took 4 hours 8 to midnite to get to Savannah
one cop scare in Ga but he pull out but drove passed after we slowed
cops were most pulling trucks or just showing the flag [lites on] by the road sides
got good deals on hotel rooms on the net but stayed outside the eclipse zone of gougers

Great pic! It's nice that you caught a couple of stars too.

I generally enjoy these sorts of things. I find the mind of nutty, idiots fascinating, but good grief, I've been watching for nearly 5 mins and they haven't gotten to anything interesting. And the worst part is that the nutter isn't in the video so we don't get a full picture of how crazy they are. Sadly, I don't think I'll be able to watch all 24ish mins.

Fake! Photoshop, prolly.

Ahhh, my good man... the umbra was 7 miles wide, but the penumbra was much wider. Folks as far away as Ohio got to see a partial eclipse and were impressed.

No doubt if that video could've shown the contrast between the umbra and penumbra more clearly, it would've been much better and would've been a more accurate representation.

"From a million miles out in space, NASA’s Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) captured 12 natural color images of the moon’s shadow crossing over North America on Aug. 21, 2017. EPIC is aboard NOAA’s Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR), where it photographs the full sunlit side of Earth every day, giving it a unique view of total solar eclipses. EPIC normally takes about 20 to 22 images of Earth per day, so this animation appears to speed up the progression of the eclipse.": https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/goddard/2017/nasas-epic-view-of-2017-eclipse-across-america

I actually bought this one from Ted Hesser. Not a composite shot. It is the result of a team and 4 days of work to line a climber up with perfect timing/location to the totality.

Shot at Smith Rock State Park in Oregon.

+1. I was talked out of going 90 minutes south of Charlotte. I saw the 98.3% version.

DeGrass Tyson says sub-totality vs totality is like kissing your lover vs having sex with your lover.

This vid shows a time lapse and also the scene on the ground near where the camera was positioned. Best overall vid I have seen. Pretty short and very sweet. Go in about 1:30 if pressed for time.
