Yeah, that's a down payment for a dealer.
I do understand what sammys saying though.

I think the wife and I came to an agreement, we'll ask for $1500 and see were it goes. Thanks again for everyone's opinions.
Guess I feel lucky enough to be in a situation where money isn't the priority....Steve

Gave my E320 wagon to a friend who's a young dad. Drove it two years, and was rearended by a GMC suv with his kid in the back a couple weeks ago. Totaled the Benz, but the car saved his kid from injury.

Freeform,

I would, and have, sold vehicles and other stuff to those I deemed deserving at steep discounts. I did not give the items away as I wanted the individuals to not feel like a charity case and keep their dignity. Set the price on what they can afford so they have buy in get a good deal, maybe even haggle a little so they have a story to tell.

I absolutely agree with FOG. Definitely don't want to make her feel bad or like a charity case, not my intention..
Thanks everyone

Just to close this out. The wife and I delivered the car to our friend. She was absolutely thrilled and very grateful. Guess it makes you feel good to help someone in need if you have the means to do so.
On aside note my 14 year old daughter isn't thrilled about it, she will be driving in less then 6 months and for sure that that she was getting the car. Oh well...Steve

Nice move. I would not expect anything back, but you know you'll have an easy time calling a favor, especially if it involves a ride!

If you are truly going to give the car to this person, accompany him to the title office, and watch him switch the title into his name. Don't just take it to a notary. I'm sure you trust this person, but prudence dictates that you ensure you no longer have ties, or liability to that car.

Charity is a wonderful thing, but protect yourself from future trouble as you are doing it.

My question is why is the friend in this situation to start with? How many poor decisions have contributed to where they are now? My experience is if someone can't afford a car in that price range, they also can't afford insurance, taxes, tags, gas, etc. It's the truth.............

I would never give or even sell a car to a friend.
To much annoyance if by chance the car later causes gives them trouble and expensive bills.

And would not give a 5 grand car for free, because giving things for free makes it worthless.
You get a thanks but it will never mean the same thing as what it meant for you to give the car away. Overall you just set yourself up for dissapointment in the relation with that person.

If it was a piece of sjit ex beater that no longer runs, and it's parked in your garage, and you are fed up with it, and friend asks if he can have it for a project. sure.
"by all means, come pick it up... has to be gone by then or it goes to the scrap yard, Do with it as you please, I just want it out of my way."
