Drum brakes
Going through the brakes on a 73 jeep commando, and a few of the brake shoes were kinda nasty.
At $25 per axle, replacing all the shoes was an easy decision. However, the NEW shoes are about half the thickness of the original 74k miles shoes! Different materials, so I am going with the new. But... the rears won't center properly. Not in/out, but low. Missing by about 1mm or so, so the drum drags on the shoes. Switched shoes to different locations and all is well, except for one shoe. No matter where it goes it drags on the drum. What do you guys think about using 7 New shoes and 1 old one? It's on the rear, if that matters.

All the brakes on an axle need to be identical, so six new shoes rather than 7 if you are going to go that route.
I would try to figure out why the shoes don't fit right, and/or order a different set of shoes.

Thanks guys, I figured it out.
Apparently there is a primary and secondary shoe. They are just a bit different. One goes at the front, one at the rear of each axle. Take 21!!

However, the NEW shoes are about half the thickness of the original 74k miles shoes!
I ran into the same thing when I bought new shoes from Stoddard for my 356; the new shoes are maybe 60% of the thickness of the old ones. They work, and realistically I will probably never have to replace them in my lifetime, but it's still evidence of a corner being cut. The best brake shoes I've ever had were a set that I had relined by a company in West Sacramento that does truck brakes. They were absolutely beautiful and properly chamfered as well.

Also - make sure you relax the adjustment on the emergency brake cable - prior to installing new shoes on rear. Once all is installed and initial shoe adjustment on both sides, the set the E brake free play.

BTW. - the primary shoes job is to grab the friction surface 1st ( in normal wheel rotation) that causes the shoe assy to shift / rotate mechanically slightly allowing the larger rear shoe to fully engage the friction surface for maximum effectiveness
