California Black Plate in North Carolina

Saw this tonight heading back home with take-out Chinese. Pretty sure this is the re-issue version. Not vintage, but still kinda cool to see one on the East Coast.

Yes, new issue. Funny thing...those '63-'69 style CA plates were originally intended for folks who owned vintage cars and wanted a more period-correct look for their license plates. It turns out that WAY more modern cars are sporting these black/yellow plates since they've become available. Lots of people seem willing to pay a $50 buy-in fee (plus an additional $40 to renew each year) just to have a black license plate on their vehicle

Another neat plate to look for on the highway...just like the yellow DWI "party plates".

And don't be fooled by the people with Colorado "Pioneer" plates.
Anyone can buy one, you too can be a pioneer.

DENVER—Want one of those spiffy Colorado pioneer license plates, but you don’t have any pioneers in your family tree?
Not to worry, just fork over $50 and you too can be a pioneer.
Colorado’s Department of Revenue says it stopped requiring proof from pioneer descendants two years ago after they learned they didn’t have the legal right to demand it.

SF and LA are rear-only.

Oh, you're talking about plate requirements - never mind.

Definitely see more black plates on new cars than the old ones. LOL, saw on on a Tesla the other day, ironic.

Had a CA blue plate on my 74 2002 which I tried to transfer on the 911 but DMV wouldnt do it. I got the re-issued black plates (personalized) instead though not period correct looks better in guards red than the white plate.
