Setting time limits on the ipad

Trying to limit my kid's Ipad time on a daily basis...
I've read and tried all the "Guided Access" options which let you set a time on specific apps. But it seems to be app specific, and a PITa to setup for 100 apps, plus seems like you need to turn that on each time...

Do you guys know of a simple way/app that gives any Ipad say 1hour of use in a 24 hrs period, and done ? Can't find that... I imagine Apple does not want to enforce this easily, they want addicts.

Can't you just turn off the wi-fi router?

Need to play with this more. Trying to figure out how to filter youtube better in our house. Their content filtering does not catch near all of it!

"Put that damn thing down, we're going outside."

Seriously, I find that my kids gravitate to their devices when they are bored. If I ask my 7 year old if he wants to ride his bike or go fishing, he's out the door before me, device long forgotten.

I generally appreciate your comments, but that is a tad presumptuous and typical "internet-judgmental", you can do better... Those things are around the house and you cannot be hovering over the kids (plural) every minute of every day... having a timer option to limit overall ipad time is a simple and effective solution and I wish the crack dealer (apple) would implement one. Thanks StomachMoney, I looked up that one and it led to a slew of others, I tried a simpler (cheaper) timer style locker for now, I'll see how that goes... makes them more "receptive" to playing outside and reading, if nothing else ! ;-)

PS: Wifi-off is no bueno, lots of games don't require it, and too many devices need it, like security cameras, Echo, thermostat, it's a wifi jungle out there!

Totally... But there's time I gotta cook/cleanup/take care of something in the house and I wanted to make sure the ipad is not >1 hour per day total... It takes over from books and other "inside" activities too easily.

We never had an issue with our daughter.....Neighbors have several times a day with (no screen time) and the kids have no use use electronics during that time. They say it was getting unmanageable.

DE I agree, some comments are a bit outside of reality. I know in our household my wife and I have let screen time get ahead of us with the kids and we are working to scale it back. Congrats to those who have been perfect parents of perfect children. I wouldn't change mine for yours but congrats just the same.

My kids don't know the unlock passwds for our various devices. In order to play they have to bring the device to my wife or me and specifically ask.

Funny story, my 6y old figured out the password on the ipad by observing the concentration of finger smudges on the screen, figuring out that was code related, and narrowing it down to the correct 4 numbers. Then I imagine he surreptitiously spied on us to get the the order... Points for effort !

I did the code too but it won't lock by itself after a certain time, if in use... Anyway, all good now, it's just sad Apple does not implement this at the OS level, the app by app solution is beyond lame and useless... There's mountains of evidence those devices are OK for about an hour a day (there are some very cool games that are very educational, I play Bad piggies with them all the time), but pretty bad over that time...

>Congrats to those who have been perfect parents of perfect children

BerettaFan, I could not have put it any better ;-) But my younger self also said (and thought) all kind of righteous stuff before he had kids, and I emphasize kids plural. Been there done that... I no longer judge others' parenting.

LOL, yeah, I said the same thing, "My kid(s) will never..............."

As if the decision was always ours to make.

I have set my router to disable internet on a schedule for my sons tablet. Without internet connection the tablet is pretty useless (for the games he likes to play).
Rarely he hits the limit, most of the time I tell him to put the damn thing down and go outside and play...

He's understands can't be using it for hours and hours..

Sorry if my post came across "too easy". It isn't taking the easy route to physically restrict access. It requires interaction. It works well at my house - I have done it both ways and find that just handing over the device and collecting it again works best. And it is bullet proof. Filters, timers etc. always can be circumvented. Another cool thing is that if the device isn't around, they tend to forget about it and get busy with something else.

I never got tablets for the children. They get a basic kindle to read, and next level is a laptop at start of high school, then a smartphone at 16. I don't think there is much value add in a tablet for a kid. But that's just my two cents.

I won't judge, some times I'm thrilled for my kids to play games on a device and get out of my face for a little while.

Set my brother up with OpenDNS so he would not have to worry about his grandkids. You can filter both by content and access times.

Yes, great babysitting. But mine are old enough where I can yell at them to go to their room and not get out until I get them. If there is no electronics in the room, they get busy with something else. Usually reading or arts and crafts ...

Being in CA, the weather is mostly nice and the yard looks like a playground too with trampoline, ping pong etc. etc., so they also are sent out there if they overstay their welcome inside.
