you ever forget to ask "hey how much will that cost?"
damn it.
i had my mtn bike in the back of my truck. (locked under my locked topper). i had to drive back to my old hometown for business and i found myself right next to the shop i bought the bike at. i stopped in to say hi, and they asked why i haven't brought the bike in for a free tune. they reminded me i get free tunes for life. i'm "okay" at doing my own work. the rear derailler sometimes gives me fits. i admit it. i told them i moved. he said, if i had my bike he would do it really quick..hour or so. if it didnt have anything major. i told him my bike was with me (lucky). he saw my shredded back tire. i guess i need to lay off the burn outs. :Di isaid,.."hey toss a new on on there for me! i hate trying to set the bead on the new tubeless tires anyways." i ran of to meet my wife.. $95!! hahah..i just googled our tire choice. i got HOSED!! oh well. i need to find a presta valve inflator for my air compressor now. lesson learned. on the bright side,i cant wait for this evenings ride. my bike is clean!! and the shifting is crispy. (if that makes any sense) |
happy my chain didnt need replacement..it's halfway worn out.. i'll DIY that fo so.
|
it is surely a nice thing to trust a business so much that you don't ask how much it costs.
equally sad when you are burned for doing it. |
Just curious how much would the tire alone cost? Maybe $40? What was the break down on the labor and parts?
I have not taken my mtn bike in for a tuneup for a couple of years but I am guessing $200 can. but your situation reminds me to get an estimate. |
Nope, never forget. Although the doctor can't ever tell me what something will cost until after it's done.

Hey if you have to ask how much it cost ......

The starter motor on my 2001 E320 gave up the ghost. I had it towed to a shop where I worked as parts manager for 4 years because I thought I would get treated fairly. I gave two weeks notice when I left on good terms.
I did my home work and the Bosch starter motor listed for around $250 depending on vendor. Labor was approximately 2 hours, so should be around $500 to $600. Car was dropped off on Monday. Finally got the call Friday afternoon. "Cars all set, you can pick it up Saturday. Oh we had some trouble getting your exhaust off and the labor is 6.5 hours and the starter is $370.00." So final tally $982.00!!!!!! I just about fell over. I told them I think they're way out of line. They gave me a break on the labor and finally lowered the price of the starter to $250. Bastards! Shame on me for not asking for a quote before they started. Shame on them for trying to stick it to me. |
Some tires see a massive difference between msrp and internet. My tires are $75 but typically available for <$40 online. Hopefully you got a pretty fancy tire? I feel bad for local shops, they don't know their product and the prices are too high.
Does derailleur now work for you? Hopefully isn't a bent hanger, then you'd be out even more. There is one place I go for bike mechanic in Seattle, for stuff I can't do. they're always booked weeks out. Prices are fair and they have all the knowledge. Most other shops I can do better myself, faster, cheaper and with less hassle. |
Ultimately, it may have been worth the $95 to change the tire, clean the bike, and have the shifting improved. I am usually a DIY guy myself, but sometimes, time can get in the way.

i worked in as bike shop in college. There was no labor charged in replacing a tire if the tire was bought at the shop. IIRC the most expensive tire we sold was $19. but that was a while ago. If they charged you $95 the tire better be packed with white stuff. There is NO WAY I would pay that. No way in hell. I' have them yank that BS tire right back off of there. And after i stormed out of there after NOT PAYING I would make sure i never set foot in there again. And I would tell everyone I could just how much of a rip-off that place is. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1502726184.jpg |

Idiot Service Advisor tried to bill him for an "hour" after sitting on car for 8 days. Service Adviser got called away from the kiosk as he was presenting the tab, my brother walked behind the counter, grabbed his keys and walked out to his truck. SA tried to stop him by saying 'you owe us you have to pay"- brother flexed on him and said, "who's gonna stop me? You? **** you.." Drove off. HAHAHA. |
Meh. Quality bike tires are expensive. I just paid $45 each for my road bike tires. Tire, tube, labor....$95 is not crazy. Especially if its a kevalar belted tire. Those things are sum biatch to get off.

My sons meds, with insurance, typically ran $200-300 per month out of pocket.
Always used GoodRX for his prescription as that got it down to ~$100 per month. Pediatrician put him on something new with a cash price of $250, GoodRX price ~$70.00 I pick up the new script yesterday and hand the Pharmacist the goodrx card. She looks confused, asks me if I'm sure I want to use that. I said, sorta smugly, yeah. She says, welllll, the out of pocket with your insurance is $35.00 Oh, well, never mind then. $35.00 is good. :D |

Tubeless is very easy: put tire on remove valve from valve stem (get removal tool at bike shop..its cheap) fill tire with sealant through valve stem (small hose onto stem and sealant) put valve back in use a spare tube as a strap around tire to squeeze tire onto rim inflate |

They sell a simple little valve stem adapter than screws onto your presta stem. I leave one on my road bike valve stem just in case. I think vash is saying he looked up the particular tire and found he'd been hosed. maybe just the tire was $95?

$75 for the tire.
$15 for install and sealant. those foldable kevlar tires are a challenge!! then tax. i essentially overpaid the tire about $30. |
That must be a Porsche type tire at that price...
labor is cheap! |
Yup... brought my 911 to a local shop to fix some oil leaks and some other things.
He did a great job and worked on it like it was his own, unfortunately, he charged me full rate. That stung... |

That seems like standard bring and mortar markup to me. |
Bike shops make their money on maintenance, not bike sales. The "lifetime tuneup" is a great way to keep you coming back and get you to pay for maintenance items.
I sometimes have my commuter worked on mid week when I don't have time and bite the bullet. 50 bucks on bike repair is nothing if I compare it to what a commuter car will cost, even DIY... G |
Oh, quit your *****en, ride it and enjoy it. Or, GET A LIFE.

I expect that on some level you didn't ask because you just wanted it done.
Amazon may kill that bike shop yet. |
My gf had Hep C for quite a long time, I'm guessing at least 15 years. She has been going to the local liver center for checkups, until the hospital closed. A couple years ago, a new liver center opened with different doctors, and I told her to get a referral from her primary. She went and got tested and was at stage 2. A year later, it progressed to the high 2s. Tried to get medical to cover it but it was denied. We appealed and it was still denied. A few months later the liver center did another test and she came back stage 3.
Harvoni was prescribed. $30k a month for the meds x 2 months, but medical did cover it. I didn't want her worrying about the co-pay because she typically has a 20% co-pay, so I told her I'd take care of it. When I picked up her first dose I just gave my credit card to the pharmacy and expected a charge in the thousands! I get the charge slip back and it was $5! The pharmacy worked with the manufacturer and got a discount card for $5 co-pay. The pharmacy even worked with the liver center and got the extra month of meds for her! |
Best to change the FRONT and REAR tires simultaneously to keep the AWD/ Garmin data working. Different tread patterns/ not factory recommended. I'd park it immediately!

I don't think you overpaid at all. You paid for them to have a tire and sealant in stock that they could put on, essentially, while you waited. If you did it yourself, you would have to find the tire and sealant either in a store, like the shop you were at, purchase it and install it. Or find it online, order, pay for shipping, wait 1 to 5 days for it, then put it on yourself. The older I get, the more I value my time over money, $30 is 15 minutes to me. Free tune-ups for life. They have to pay for those somehow. And more importantly, part of that tire mark-up is paying for a quality bike mechanic that will make your derailleur shift well. |
95 USD for a bicycle tire??
That's a ripoff |
I had a tow truck driver in Dallas attempt to charge me $1800 to unlock my car after I locked my keys inside the rental car. I signed the invoice he presented as I thought it was $18.00 not $1800 for the service.
I ended up arguing with him and walking away (with my keys) and leaving $18 on the hood. He parked behind my car for 30 minutes before giving up. I had rental insurance and his license plate number so I didn't care if he decided to go nuts on the car. |
cold you for sure need to give his info to city officials.

Now I'm scared! :D
I just went into a glass place to get some custom cut reading lenses installed into my dental loupes. Yesterday, I visited two places, both of which required eye exams and were booked out until september. The second place wanted me to get an entirely new set of glasses, yet the salesperson was nice enough to be honest with me "look- I know what you are trying to do. We aren't allowed to do it for legal reasons, but, if you go up the street to XXXX, they can get it done and they do a good job." Today, at lunch, I went to that place to get an estimate, and basically just to see if it could be done. He took my glasses, went into the back, and several minutes later came back, handing me back a pile of my croakies/ magnifiers/ side shields, with him keeping the frames. "We can have it back by tomorrow- perhaps even today." Thanks I said "But I have patients to see this afternoon." Laughing I said " you guys don't mess around." I was just trying to get an estimate. I was a little concerned as without my magnfiers, I could not treat anyone. I felt like Clark Griswold in vacation where upon not wanting the family truckster (he wanted the little red sports thingee), he turned around to get back into his old car, which had been crushed. Fortunately, I have a spare pair of loupes at the office, and am excited at how soon they will be done, especially after yesterday's setbacks, however.... We never discussed price! :D |
Former co-worker had a very large door installed on his shed.
Buyer: How much? Seller: Big door, it's gonna be about fifteen. Buyer thought it was $1,500. He got a bill for $15,000. He paid. Make sure you're clear on 'how much'... |

As an update to my post- I got a call from company XXXX.
"Your glasses are ready..." Picked them up. In 3 hours, they not only cut a new set of 1.5x readers for the main lenses- they cleaned and refurbished the main glasses, all new screws, tightened everything- I also bought new croakies and some new set screws... $!6.00 in extra price. total price- $65 compared to first place $140 deductible after insurance. If you live near Harrisonburg Virginia, please visit Colonial glasses off University Dr. Well worth the trip. Forget Tab's advice on new shoes! These will get you laid! LOL :D http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1502926056.JPG |
I refilled my prescription at CVS today, it's always $606.40. Nope, price change, $986.40 this month.
At least insurance will pay me back at the end of this year. |

Here's another one. Several years ago, a contractor friend renovated a 2 bd walkup for me. New paint, carpeting/tile, and locks and it ran about $5k. Not bad, but a little high. I had another 2 bd that became vacant and I gave it to him to do. Same stuff to be done, but the shower/tub had a leaking pan. They ripped everything out to the guts, repiped in copper and put in a new shower made with some type of solid surface material. They also changed out the toilet and sink, while they were at it. I get the bill a few months later. $24k! |
