Houston has been crippled.

I know words don't mean a thing, but that is all the rest of us have.

Your safety is the top priority now.

Lost track of how much rain. My gauge only holds 6", I've emptied it twice and it was brim full both times and it is pouring at the moment. We've been under almost constant extreme tornado alerts since around 2 AM Saturday morning and are under one at the moment. This chit really gets old and no end in sight.

The real moment of truth for us is how high the Brazos crests maybe late Tuesday or Wednesday. Some areas of the watershed north of here have had 30+ inches.

Harris County and Houston city govts have request anyone with shallow draft boats or inflatables to please call, they need all the help they can get for high water rescues... apparently 1000's still stranded. This is truly a biblical proportion flood it seems.

One thing kind of strange: they keep telling people to not get into attics if house really floods, to get on to the roof. We keep wondering just how most people are supposed to get on their roof if there is 4-5' of water on the ground and no ladder ?? just wondering.

May or may not be related, but it is eerily calm and quiet in SW Ohio. Not a cloud in the sky, no breeze, no sound - and I mean, none of the birds or cicadas that are usually chirping and buzzing away. It is very eerie. We usually get some weather disruptions after hurricanes in the west Gulf. I wonder if some effect from Harvey is making it so calm here and affecting the animals.

Have you seen any Piggly Wiggly trucks?

Scene 18 of Close Encounters:
The government prepares for a large-scale operation in Wyoming. A group of astronaut-looking uniformed people enter a bus while a suit wonders what's in store for them.
Major Walsh and some officials try to devise a story so horrific that it'll scare everyone within a 300-square-mile radius to evacuate.
Once the planning's complete, the government moves out in trucks labeled Baskin Robbins, Piggly Wiggly, and Coca-Cola. (This government coverup brought to you by Baskin Robbins. Baskin Robbins: the 32nd flavor is conspiracy.)

I heard on the news that IAH is closed tomorrow and Hobby for the next 3 days after today, and those are both if there is no new flooding. I don't think you're flying into town any time soon.

Yeah, the airline emailed me saying my connecting flight out of Newark into Houston is canceled. Maybe I will just stay in Portugal and tough it out.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1503867549.JPG

Wow, looks rough! ;)

Enjoy. Better there than here.

I'm high and dry, but only about ¼ - 1/3rd mile from Buffalo Bayou

This is a good comparison, but you can stop watching after about 15 secs, because it just repeats.

Stay safe folks.

I know how it feels. Sandy brought over 5 feet of water into my home. Flooding like that is absolutely devastating.

Thoughts and prayers with you.

This is Waugh Drive where Allen Parkway goes under Waugh.

We just walked the dogs down to see Buffalo Bayou in its flooded glory.

I view from over the bayou towards Memorial (which is under water).

I think most of this area is under 15-25' of water.

I'll post a bunch of photos tonight. We have a new issue. We are behind a dam and they are going to let it go full for the first time ever. Trying to get the latest flood maps.

onewhippedpuppy 08-27-2017 05:23 PM

You guys are in my prayers, seriously. Godspeed and if you want a place to crash in KS, let me know.

porsche4life 08-27-2017 05:26 PM

James, keep us updated, and if any of you guys need anything, please let us know.

My understanding is that the dam that James is talking about was put in to protect Houston from the rain that falls west of Houston. The normal process is to let the dam fill and Buffalo Bayou recede, and then do a slow controlled release (the dam releases into Buffalo Bayou which is in the videos that I posted above) to allow the bayou to empty without flooding Houston.

This sounds bad, but I'm assuming it's because there's more on the way, and I think I've read that the dam isn't in the best of shape, but I'm not positive about that.

masraum 08-27-2017 06:32 PM

It started raining buckets at my place about an hour ago.

red-beard 08-27-2017 07:25 PM

Well, my neighborhood looks screwed. My house _may_ be OK. But 95% of the roads will be flooded, if the dam goes full.

red-beard 08-27-2017 07:30 PM

It is confusing. They announced a release, which should be good. But the reason is they are expecting the dam to go full and do not want the emergency spillways to allow uncontrolled flow. So they are releasing ahead of this. This will cause additional flooding downstream.

They are in the process of upgrading the dam. It will not be finished until after next year. I think they are concerned with the dam giving way.

Water level reached 102.5 last year, which was highest ever. It is about to hit 100 feet

99.5 = 87000 acre-feet
102.5 = 122,000 acre-feet
The emergency spillway will release at 108.
