the rickman restoration

my pops is the berries! he put me on a motorcycle at the age of 5 and had me racing MX by 7 ir so, had me race go-karts, enduros & contributed to my spec racer build and was my biggest fan on every race weekend.

he rode bultaco's and husky's pretty much exclusively in the 70-80's other than an enduro season on a 78 PE175 that he bequeathed to me the following season when I turned 14 and was district 36 eligible to compete in enduros. he also instilled the DIY attitude in me and often told me I could not learn with my mouth open. I still remember that, but I'm no better at practicing his preaching on that to this day...

anyway, a life long buddy of my pops is suffering cancer and it became clear to my old man that the guy always regretted not putting his old 70's rickman moto crosser back together before he got sick. with it in boxes in his garage my pops with some help of his wife was able to recover most of the parts. he has spent the last three months reassembling it while having to fab some simple parts, install period correct, but not rickman levers, shifter and brake foot lever. he has shinned and cleaned the thing from bow to stern even the spokes.

well, he got it running today for the 1st time in what could be 40+ years! he will be taking it back to grass valley this weekend to his sick buddy that may not ride it, but I'm sure will enjoy just looking at it to remind him of his vibrant youth. doing this as you can see by his grin has taken my 71 y/o pops back to his motorsports days as well.

joe's son,

t

If I were your dads sick friend I'd be grateful.

I'd thank him for his kindness and generosity and no matter how sick I'd take it for a ride and find the highest cliff I could ride that sucker off of and go out in style with an ear to ear grin.

Your dads a good man.

I have often considered that if my condition was terminal at any point and I could still ride or drive fast. I'm good healthy for now, but how better to go than in or on your favorite hobby vehicle going as fast as you could with an end plan?

as grim as that sounds, it's not he "die peacefully in his sleep". I don't want to go peacefully in my sleep... my pops don't either

Wow.. just wow... great story and super cool bike... I remember those from my old dirt biking days, +Bulltaco, Maiko, DKW, Hodaka, Penton...

I hope his friend has enough strength to at least take it for a putt around the block.

very interesting bikes. two brothers from England sourced different parts for different manufactures to build their bikes. my pops noted this particular one had forks that were also OE on one of his old pursange bultacos. Chromalloy frames that were unheard of back then. my dad spent many an hour polishing the frame back close to it's original shine. went through the carb and upon fueling it gas poured from the petcock everywhere. he took the PC apart to find a piece of cork was used to seal in the off postion that was dust by now. he fashioned a copy out a piece of fuel line, reinstalled and it worked. would not start initially so he had to pull the flywheel and clean up the points. said after spark was present it started after like three kicks.

he lives an hour south of me so I won't be able to see it in person before the presentation this weekend, which kind bums me out. I look to see if ive still got any of the emails he sent with other photos.

Great story - Thanks for posting.

Don/Derek Rickman produced a lot of frame kits for larger street bikes. Your choice of engines: Triumph, Norton, Kaw Z1 etc.....For a few years, they did sell dirt bikes complete with an engine:

In about 1971, Rickman began producing complete motorcycles in 3 displacements, 100 cc 125 cc and 250 cc. The 100s had Japanese Hodaka engines, the 125s had German Zundapp engines, while the 250s featured Spanish Montesa powerplants.[1] Many of these little Motocross bikes were produced from 1971 to 1975, most being shipped to America
