Nice little piece on a '68 911L in the Wall Street Journal
![]() "The car was originally sold in New Jersey to a man named Paul Rothchild, who paid $7,222. (I have the invoice, dated Aug. 8, 1968.) The car was metallic dark green at the time. Rothchild was a record producer, and in the 1960s, he became the producer for a new Los Angeles-based band called the Doors. Rothchild worked with the band for years, and has often been called the fifth Door..." The rest of the (short) story here: Grab a cup of coffee, relax and enjoy for just a bit ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Reminds me of the "L" I didn't buy because I loved my wife. Oh well, still have the wife.

This is one of the reasons I love the WSJ. They do a short piece like this on cars every week- although the cars aren't usually as interesting as this.
Would love to see the original color. |

As you all know...first year for emissions...air pump missing on this one. This was the USA version of S because S couldn't pass emissions regulations. Worked on a number of L's back in the day...not attracted to them.

But it seems like we were actually there at the time. Today? "Ohhh, it's a longnose and it's air cooled. Let us all kneel and bow towards Stuttgart!"

No, the "L" was also produced as a a ROW model. Only the US spec cars had the air pump, ROW "L" did not have an air pump and had the same 901/06 engine used in '66/'67 911. I think all 901/06 motors were aluminum cases (mine is), but not certain.
