Pre-sale car dilema
Hello Pelican Brain Trust
I have a 1990 BMW 325i convertible. The car looks and drives very nice! With one issue, there are several small dents on the trunk and hood that are noticeable. Not in your face, but subtle. I had the car looked at by a local PDR guy who is telling me there are micro cracks in the dents that will affect the repairs. Bottom line is he recommends painting. So my question is should I have the hood and trunk painted? The car is all original paint and very presentable. So will the buyer of this car appreciate the fact the paint is original and accept the small flaws or would it be best to have new paint on these panels? IS it worth the investment of say $1,000 to have the paint work done? Opinions? Thanks !!!

Those cars are hot in the market if it is an IS model or at least has sport seats. I would try to move it as is, adjusting the price for the dents. A few pix here would be nice tho so we all could better see..............

You won't recover the cost of the paint work.
What color is it? From my personal perspective, if I found repainted panels I'd assume more damage than what you tell me was really there. It's a 27 year old car, it's gonna have some blemishes.

Don't paint. The only way to properly paint will be to blend into the fenders and quarter panels, unless the dings are a foot away from them. If you "butt" paint to the adjacent panels, you'll see the color mis-match and you'll have a situation worse than before.
Micro cracks in the dings already? Sounds a little fishy to me. I could see the paint cracking by having the PDR work done. Maybe another PDR opinion is in order. See if you can get a highly recommended guy.

Heres a few pics. Hopefully you can make out the dents. The trunk has maybe 15 very small dents that the picture doesn't show.
Thanks for advise!!

That RED paint will be hard to match and with it being that shiny I wouldn't worry at all about the dents.

I sent your picture to my PDR guy (probably one of the best in the country) and he said the only reason it would have cracks in it is if someone already tried to fix it. He said it should be fixable without putting cracks, but a fix wouldn't be perfect, but it would be a lot better. He doesn't think further repair attempts will make the cracks worse, so I'd suggest finding a top-notch PDR guy. Top-notch.

Steve,
The PDR guy I took the car to did mention he thought the car had been fixed (worked on) previously. But must have been a very poor job. This PDR guy was highly recommended.....so I thought! I will see if I can find another, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of these guys around here in Ohio Thanks for the effort!! Mike

I would definitely sell as is with the dings disclosed. Paintwork will automatically trigger people to think accident. If you sell original then it will be obvious that you aren't hiding anything, and it leaves the paint decision up to the eventual buyer. Simply adjust your sale price accordingly compared to a totally perfect similar model.

Everytime I've fixed something (beyond cheap stuff and due diligence) prior to a sale I've regretted it post sale... Never got that $ back. Then again it always sold, and it's impossible to know if it would have otherwise ;-)

Thanks for all the advise guys!!
At this point I will most likely sell as is and disclose the dents as possible. Currently thinking of using BAT to sell. Any experiences with BAT? Good / bad? Thanks again! mg

On a 27 year old car, I don't think anyone is looking for absolute perfection....if they are, tell them to look elsewhere, and let the price reflect these imperfections.
No, you will not make the car worth another $1000 by fixing/repainting. |

BaT is a great bet for an E30, they are going for silly money right now.

And logically you'd have to make it worth $1,000 + $xxx otherwise zero sum game. Save the headache.
