First day of school - who else has kids starting school today?

My daughter starts her first day of Junior Kindergarten today and my son is already on the bus for his first day of Grade 2.

Pretty exciting morning around our house. My wife has stayed home with the kids so today is the first day in over 7 years she won't be with at least one of the kids.

That's exciting. Next exciting landmark is the day you get rid of kids car seats and boosters, I don't miss that. They grow up fast...I know everybody says that, but they do.

Exciting? Not compared to the day they graduate and get a job...

A little known factoid about Virginia public schools....................know as the Kings Dominion act. There is a them park (KD) off of Rt 95 north /east of Richmond. They have, apparently, powerful pull in the Va and lobby to hold off schools starting until after Labor day so they can wring out all of the possible consumer dollars to the end of Summer.

Now - if public schools cumulatively (3-4 years) miss more more than XX days of the year due to inclement weather, they can lobby to start earlier in order to give the students the best shot at standardized testing.

This year they all did just that with....................... 1 county starting 3 WEEK'S ago!

Mine also started 2 weeks ago.

Daughter got a coveted parking pass end of last week, limited on campus parking, so today she drove herself, (and her brother) to school for the first time.

Pretty stressful morning around my house but at least The Dad Cab is officially retired.

First day of school.............

Mine started his first day of school almost 30 years ago! He was excited about getting to ride the school bus to school, but unfortunately, he was bullied by a much bigger kid that day. It killed his enthusiasm for the bus so his mom or I wound up taking him each morning. All worked out well, though. He wound up graduating 4th in his high school class and went on to get a mechanical engineering degree at Georgia Tech. He went back to GT just recently and got a masters in international business. Maybe now after almost 30 years he is done with school for a while! Meanwhile, he is successfully employed by Gulfstream as an acoustics engineer. No snowflakes in my basement!

High school teacher here. This has been an exhausting and exhilarating week at a new school for me. Basketball tryouts after school. Hundreds of new names to learn. Whew.

But what a privilege it is to teach kids these days.
