In good shape, worth $10-30K. That one $100-300.

The 2002 is what placed BMW on the enthusiast radar.

Probably the 1600, before the 2002 came along. But yeah, it was a popular car.

That looks like one soggy old car in the OP. Rust is the Achilles heel of the 2002.

I believe roundies with round tail lights are more desirable, older, and none of those large dot American knee cap busting bumpers

as always it is not the rust you can see
but the rust you can't see that is the deal breaker
esp the rear suspension mounting points are a known bad area

they come in N, Ti,[2 carb] Tii, [FI] and very rare turbo
I would guess a Tii like a 73s is worth a full restore
but you can fake a Tii by swapping a 320i motor with FI in
and 5 speeds are also swapped in for the stock 4 speeds

the older 1602 is the same body but smaller motor
I have owned a 65 1800 66 1800tii 69 1602 and a 70 2002
all were fun cars but rust in the tropic's or salt areas
and parts were BMW insane priced back in the 80's

I had a real jones for getting another one five or six years ago.

I owned one 2002, a Tii, when I was a senior in HS. Owned it through college into my commission in the Navy. Five or six years ago I was the typical 55 year old in a nostalgic mode when I was looking to get another one..."buy or don't buy your hero" as OWP so well describes.

I looked and looked, almost pulled the trigger twice (PPI to the rescue), missed one due to my reticence.

I am delighted I did not get one. They are rust monkey's, slow and noisy and need the 320i motor and five speed transmission upgrade to even approach being interesting. My 560 is more compelling in the corners and would eat 2002s all day long in the straights. 2002s are really old cars...delightfully so.

Again, I love the car but I would only get a rust free project car I could inject some power and transmission upgrades into.

Sort of agree with above. Owned a 2002 briefly.

Summary conclusion came on a track day with some local car clubs. Dude was there with a beautiful 2002, maybe a tii. He was dangerously slow and something fell off.

Cute? Yes
Fun? Yes
Worth the effort? Maybe not.

They are cute though!

Cool little machine. Look great with a few mods. If it's cheap just buy it anyway. Pop a Chev V6 in there.

get the kid a 90+ volvo 240 or 940
much safer kid car with anti-lock and air bag [s]
likely cheaper by a bunch both to buy and fix

Back in the 1980's when my wife was still working she had to go to a convention in Montreal. While the cats away the mice will play so I was looking at a BMW 2002. The used car dealer had an auto and a manual transmission 2002. I tried both but the salesman talked me into the auto.

Those were the days before I got a ppi done. The car started off being good but it was not long before the engine quit particularly at red lights. When running it was a fun car to drive. Nice driving position and a nice dash layout. The manual would have been more fun.
