Herb Alpert 'Rise' vs Mangione 'Feels so good'
Which is the quintessential 70s instrumental? Listen, consider, discuss.

I grew up in the 70s and even saw Chuck in concert. My vote goes to Chuck as that song and his music always brought a smile to my face. I had a bunch of his albums; Children of Sanchez, Land of Make Believe, Chase the Clouds Away, Bellavia, Main Squeeze, Fun and Games (1980 Olympics theme) and of course, Feels So Good.
Rise is another great instrumental, but it is the disco beat that made it popular, but also detracts from it being the quintessential 70s instrumental.

Other songs that take me back to the 70s is Westchester Lady by Bob James, and Breezin by George Benson.
And a bonus from Spyrogyra, Morning Dance.

Rise.
The other one sounds like the theme song to a TV show. |

HA&TJB because they got played at Tom Johnson's shop where we were building Vetta Ventura cars on Mockingbird Lane in Dallas and across the tracks where Carroll Shelby was selling cars and building the first Cobras.

When the album came out, I remember Dick Sommers (WBZ) saying Rise was the first album recorded with a new digital technology.
I was amazed by the clarity and lack of background 'noise'. When you think about how far audio technology has come since turntables and stylus to the complex speakers available now - it's like experiencing the advancement from fire to nuclear fusion. Herb Albert was a musician/producer and innovator for over 50 years, Mangione was an entertainer. Bill K

I was born in 1970 so I don't really have the kind of memories that you might have about the 70s the way you would if you were born between 1950 and 1960, but I do remember both of those songs very clearly. I guess the Mangione is the one that is the most clear to me. I actually think that my strongest memory of the HA song is a kind of odd one. My dad was in the Navy and we spent the last couple of years of the 70s in Japan. There was 1 TV station in English, the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service station "A - farts". We got roughly 12 hours of programing that was played twice, I assume so the shift workers had an opportunity to see the shows too. Also, we saw the shows 3-6 months after the folks stateside. One of the most watched shows on base was General Hospital. At the time one of the biggest story arcs were two characters, Luke and Laura. Luke raped Laura to Rise in one episode, and from then on, anytime I heard Rise over the years, that was the thing that sprang to mind.

My parents had wide ranging musical tastes, including Herb. We had the whole stereo deal in the 60's: Reel to reel, Altec Lansing Cabinet speakers, Heath Kit Tuners and receivers, and whatever great turntable was necessary to turn vinyl into sound.
Better than the bra ads in the Sears catalog ![]() ![]() All that said, I'll go with Ramsey:

Larry Carlton "room 335" 1978
It's an 80's tune, but Larry Carlton's "smiles and smiles to go" fits in well here also. E

The Chuck Mangione song is pure 1970s.
But, so are these two, in my mind:

Never been much of a fan of HA&TTJB, or Herbie Hancock, but there were some great instrumentals that got my attention back in the day. Stuff like Tubular Bells, or The Overture from Tommy or Green Onions or even Dueling Banjos and Classical Gas.

I had the album Whipped Cream & Other Delights. The most memorable thing about it was the cover art, namely Dolores Erickson.
