Webers copy of the Big Green Egg. Just buy and egg and enjoy. Webers overpriced version is a poor copy

I've been contemplating a new grill. Had looked at the Genesis but am really liking grilling with charcoal and don't know if I want to go back to gas. Using a Weber kettle right now.

I've looked at BGE, Hasty-Bake and some handmade stuff locally. This one seems nice but dang $1,700?

I like to BBQ as much as the next guy but I don't love it $1,700 worth.

cabmandone 10-06-2017 02:30 PM

I didn't look at the price but $1700!!? That's about 300 more than my top of the line gas Summit cost.

I don't see the food tasting 5 times as good as out of my "performer" model.

For that money, it'd be a pellet smoker in addition to my regular weber. It still would come out at 50% total.

The beauty of the original weber really is how basic it actually is and that it does require some skill to turn out great food. It is like a manual shift, air cooled car vs. a bloated pdk waterpumper. :)

For that sort of dough, you could almost buy a real smoker/barbeque rig mounted on a trailer.

I'm quiting propane its like cooking with a bic lighter.

Ordering these next...Similar Weber but much less..with the Gabby santa maria style grill.

That would pair up nicely with a 750 dollar Yeti.

Ditched my propane grill for a Charbroil Tru-Infared Propane Smoker Roaster Grill.
The propane flames and fumes do not directly cook or flavor the meat.
No fussing with Charcoal.
It can roast with racks etc. or grill like those kettle style cookers.
Has a side box to put chips in to add smoke to roasting or grilling.

Because heat is infra-red or radiant ie doesn't cook with hot air, cooking at low temps is faster but still get the same tender, juicy results.

Can add a single charcoal briquette to the chip box and it adds the charcoal grill flavor without the hassle. Prefer wood chips or a mix though. And you don't have to wet or soak the chips either.

Rubbed down a turkey wth peanut oil and roasted it with no wood chips. Tasted just like a deep fried turkey and cooked in half the time without all that hot oil to heat up an contend with.

I really like it.

It's a hybrid! Light the charcoal with gas.... but my WSM only cost me $100 and the chimney around $20 and I'm guessing I can turn out better ribs, pork butt and brisket on it than on that thing..

I also got a Charbroil infrared. It rocks because you never get a flame up. I can leave it and go back later to flip the meat.
I had to learn to clean it after a couple uses. Just crank up the heat to burn it off, then spray down the grids with a garden hose.

Found mine new for $125 on ebay.

Charbroil also makes an electric one.

I’ll secind the comment about getting a pellet grill. I love mine, use it to grill just about everything, and it’s big enough to smoke two turkeys for thanksgiving!

I’m gonna buy the regular 22” Weber kettle. I want the rotisserie attachment. This to supplement my SS genesis. The new genesis is much improved. :(

Vash, pass on the Weber. Seriously... I shunned the Green Egg for years. My justification was that the Weber does a great job and how can the Egg possibly do it better for $1,000 +/-? Well, I finally gave in and bought a Kamado Joe (slightly improved version of the Egg) and I will NEVER go back to the Weber. It is worth every penny. Smoking a brisket on it right now as a matter of fact. You can set it to your desired temp and it will stay there all day rock solid. Without adding more charcoal. Keeps moisture in so food does not dry out. Food comes off tasting exponentially better than my best effort on a Weber kettle.

Trust me - just go buy one and pass on the Weber. You can thank me later.

As long as you enjoy the process and results it don't matter. They all good.

I'e had both a Weber kettle and a Weber Smokey Mountain (WSM)....both together around $500 for years. A kettle is NOT a smoker...the WSM will do a 14 hour brisket staying at 225 without adding coals too....the meats are dumb....they don't know the difference in price either :)
