Been waiting for this

Not sure if this video is fact or fiction but if the latter, it's only a matter of time.

It would take hours for me to respond...both fact and fiction.

I started in UAVs in 2002. The advances in material sciences, computational power, propulsion, batteries, sensors, etc. has made Moore's Law look like a 1958 VW in the slow lane.

Swarm, AI, facial recognition, instant mapping, etc are all realities.

My company is teamed with Northrup Grumman designing a UAS that will get to the flight on the wing of a jet and stay in the flight for many, many hours.

We had our first successful mission three weeks ago...our UASs were controlled by a manned aircraft from many miles away...more to follow.

Your accretion that "it's only a matter of time" is spot on.

Endurance is the next big hurdle. We have also teamed with the Naval Research Lab on a proposal to develop a fuel cell that fits in another one of our UAS, a Class 2.

It is an amazing field to be in.

Scary stuff but tech like this is inevitable & it will only get better/more effective.

Ask Al Franken. He's been looking into it.

I would give anything to spend a day in your shoes!

When will the UASs begin launching micro satellites?

Given that humans are so bad at writing software, what makes us think the first truly AI we develop isn't insane?

By the time we discover the insanity and put together teams of software engineers to rewrite it - something that would likely take months to accomplish - the AI will have rewritten itself, improving itself each time, billions of time, if not more.

Here's hoping that AI follows Asimov's laws better than we follow ours.

Hmmm. Last time I renewed my driver's license, I was told to remove my glasses for the photo.

I share your concerns.

The "swarm" has been worked by Lincoln Labs at MIT for over a decade. I funded some of their research when I was in uniform. AI, reliable facial recognition and other capabilities are in train.

But the key is that the shrinkage of sensors and aviation support components (GPS, auto pilot, six axis gyros, etc. to credit card-sized form factors) has allowed capabilities to be pushed from large manned aircraft into relatively tiny aircraft.

These guys are putting a gimbal camera on one of our UAS. Ball Turret Cameras | MicroUAV

Click on one and look at the weights and specs. Crazy stuff.

This guy and I are working a more modern version of this UAS for the Army and Marines:

The video is five years old - imagine the changes. Not if, but when.

We are not the only ones:

Lethal Autonomous Dragon: China’s Approach To Artificial Intelligence Weapons – Analysis – Eurasia Review

China does not want to be at the receiving end of a technological asymmetry in what may very well be the conventional approach to war in the future. In part, it is guided by its own ambitions and more importantly confidence in being a step ahead of other countries in the creation of lethal autonomous weapons.

I was the head of the NATO working group for UAS interoperability when I was still in uniform...every one is worried about this since it is often commercially available.

On the news there was a story reported about having them for rent somewhere in Malaysia or in that area.
