Air Berlin flyby in Düsseldorf

Supposedly the tower gave them clearance for a left turn "in case of aborted landing".

Everything looked normal as they were coming in. Why would they abort landing? Surely he couldnt be serious about doing that on purpose.

They are ceasing operations and that was the last flight in/out. It was a grand gesture.. They also did water cannon salutes, etc..

I see. It did look like it was executed well. That also explains why so many people were filming an otherwise ordinary landing approach.

German controllers love this sort of off the shelf flybys!
We used to do similar left turnouts at Frankfurt between the tower and the perpendicular runway.

Air Berlin is ceasing operations, not Duesseldorf...I had to look it up since I'm not very smart. Nice wave off.

One last thing, am I the only one who thinks a woman's German accent is, uh, scharf?

When I was doing aircraft weapons testing at a government range, we called that a panel check. Very cool, nice send-off.

If the runway were occupied the arrival would of been told to "Go Around".
A Go Around is plan B if Plan A fails.

If he were departing a low fast wheels up pass 50 feet above the runway with a nice steep climb end of runway would of been impressive, and generated a few concerned phone calls from the uninformed public..

I rather like their accent. It takes some getting used to though & they can sexy it up a bit if they want

"The pilots of an Air Berlin flight that performed a fly-past during the insolvent carrier's last long-haul flight to its hub in Düsseldorf (from Miami) have been suspended, the airline said on Wednesday."

A couple of the network news broadcasts last night went sensationalistic and showed the very misleading still you see here (see at :35-39) and said the pilots had been suspended. Fail.

Suspended from a now closed company. That’s a real heartbreaker.

Because this was quite obviously planned in advance, I suspect that’s all figured out already. Maybe a senior captain and first officer that are ready to retire anyway?

Allegedly the German air controllers at Frankfurt Airport are renowned as a short-tempered lot. They, it is alleged, not only expect one to know one's gate parking location, but how to get there without any assistance from them. So it was with some amusement that we (a Pan Am 747) listened to the following exchange between Frankfurt ground control and a British Airways 747, call sign Speedbird 206.
Speedbird 206: "Frankfurt, Speedbird 206 clear of active runway."
Ground: "Speedbird 206 taxi to gate Alpha One-Seven."
The BA 747 pulled onto the main taxiway and slowed to a stop.
Ground: "Speedbird, do you not know where you are going?"
Speedbird 206: "Stand by, Ground, I'm looking up our gate location now."
Ground (with quite arrogant impatience): "Speedbird 206, have you not been to Frankfurt before?"
Speedbird 206 (coolly): "Yes, twice in 1944, but it was dark ... and I didn't land."

The last flight of Air Berlin made a heart shaped flyover over Berlin this weekend. Clearance for this manoever on 1,000 meters hight.

Well, this is what happens when everything has to be cheap cheap cheap. I hate those airlines, like Ryan Air and such.
