school me on 09 Cayman s, quick rundown?
I know nothing about these cars, nothing at all. One was offered to me by a friend because he's tired of it and wanted something new. I am looking known issues. I know Porsche has done away with the RMS and IMS issues on those cars. This is PDK, direct injection. Its has 85,000 miles on the motor. I am thinking about selling my S2000 once I get this car and it will service as my daily along with my dirty trucks. Its pretty dang clean. I wish it was stick shift but hey, if I want to wrap my hand around a stick, I go drive my old 911. What do you guys think?
I got the chance to drive around the block Saturday after our bike ride. The handling isn't as sharp or go-cart like compared to my S2000. Maybe I was not pushing hard enough or simply not used to it. Its plush for a lil' sports car. More seat time on it is needed? |

Drive more and play with the PDK like it was a stick shift. Then pass judgement.

I love my 2012, have had it for 1.5 years now and put 15k miles on it. The PDK is faster than the manual but I wanted a 6 speed for my fun car, I looked long and hard to find a manual transmission. Try sport mode on the PDK and don't be afraid to get up into the revs some. I honestly have never driven a car that handles as well as the Cayman in the real world with imperfect road conditions, granted I am running Pilot Sports that last about 12k miles. I do my own maintenance and it isn't too bad to work on, oil filter can be a pain with the hot exhaust but you just have to take your time. Brakes are easy, and overall the car has been extremely reliable. I did have a shifter cable break 3.5 hours away from home and managed to make it home in 3rd gear. It was a holiday weekend and I wasn't about to leave it on the side of the road.
My only real complaint is I still miss my 88 Carrera, the Cayman is hands down a better car but I still miss that feeling only an air cooled Porsche can give you. Did I mention how great the a/c works? 100+ degree's outside and the inside is 68. I felt the 997 was too much of a GT car for me and the Cayman has been a great compromise as another air cooled 911 was out of the equation for me.

I am OK with PDK, but just want a stick for a sports car. Its not the end of the world. Like I said, I have other sticks shift 911s I can drive. I am looking issues. I try to read some on the net, but guys complain about squeaks and other minor stuff. Plus, there are so much info that reading all will make my head spin. I have to make a decision in a few days.
Shifter cable seem to be a issue with these? Is there a permanent fix or will it break again due to poor design? I am also worry about the famous electronics on the typical new German cars. Had a bad taste with my wife's Audi Turbo Last edited by look 171; 09-17-2017 at 09:01 PM.. |

I had the chance to drive just about everything Porsche offers at the Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham Alabama last year. None of them had standard transmissions. The PDK when driven hard was absolutely incredible. One of the "we'll do the driving, you get to ride" demonstrations was the launch control of the 911 GTS Turbo. 0-70-0 mph across a parking lot in the blink of an eye. Make that no blink for me, as I got tunnel vision. They claim they have 2 cars that run that routine, 50 "launches" each per day, and they have yet to break one. I'd say go for a really spirited drive in your friends PDK Cayman and you might just forget all about the stick. The current generation of offerings from Porsche are just light years advanced as compared to my old 911SC.

I haven't had any or heard of any electrical issues with my '08 Boxster. I have read about DI engines having some sort of issue, but that is not in Porsches, but in other branded DI cars. I haven't heard of any issues other than the <'09 IMS issues. Wait, isn't there some AOS thing on these? But then you just replace that from time to time and problem solved.

I agree with RKDinOKC, the easiest way to learn drive car, is do it as much as you can

Why are they moving down to 996 pricing?

I've only driven one and for only a few laps but really, really liked it. I've heard of some issues with components not syncing, like the mirror isnt recognized or a seatbelt latch, software issues. Mechanically I think they are pretty solid and would really like one.
Good luck! |

Personally I think you'll regret selling the S2000 once the newness of the Cayman wears off.

Who was it that heard noises from their motor an ended up selling the car to a local porsche wrench due to the need of a new motor? Any idea is those motors were ever installed in the 09 S?

I see no downside to an 09+ cayman S. Possibly the PDK but you may grow to like it, most folks seem to... Vs a 911, even an older one, it's missing a little in traction out of corners but gains in direction change and entry speed... you drive it a little different than a 911 (in faster, smooth apex and exit) but you don't get as much "shot out of a corner" feel as from a 911. To date my Cayman S (sold) remains one of my favorite all time Porsches. Easy to work on as well. Solid car !

Based on my research when I was shopping...
up to 2005 you could replace the IMS externally with a clutch change 2006-2008 required the case to be opened to replace the IMS 2009 the motor was re-designed, the S had DFI, the base did not. IMHO a 2009-2012 S would be the sweet spot as later years introduced too much drive by wire stuff.

If you decide to pass on it, hit me up. I might be interested if it's a good deal.

Why do think that? I will have to agree with you to a point. I love the S2000 and know that I will miss it a lot once gone. The go-kart like handling is great and its fast enough for me in this big mess called traffic. Like me a little more torque to get going. |
