ugh.... another power point

So I'm working on my BAS in Software Dev - getting to do both mongodb and Android apps this term. Lots of fun

But I also have to take a few business classes for some reason. I actually got something out of my intro to management - but I'm doing "Principles of E Commerce" this term... and when it comes to e-commerce, I'm very principled - as in, you won't get the code until your check clears.

Anyway, what makes this class even worse is that every week our homework is to be submitted as a power point presentation. And we are analyzing various sites, what they do right, and wrong, and what can be done to enhance the user experience. All of us students got to give the instructor a great lesson on network security (he admits he's deficient and wanted us to teach him for the night) and since everyone else in the class is networking focused, I gave a little demo and talk on web technologies for the back end and how the back end and front end can be swapped out willy nilly when things are Done Right.

So... one more power point comparing 3 different e-commerce sites. Since part of our thing includes comparing to walk-in buying experience, I managed to find a guns/ammo/gear wholesaler who also has a store front in my town Unfortunately, their website sucks, so I'm doing a "here's what these 2 are doing right and here's how my example makes a soup sandwich out of it"

So, any chance you can then use the power point for class to get the gun shop to hire you to upgrade their site- two birds one stone sort of deal?

No, because while I can identify issues and tell you how it could work better, I don't do graphic design. Turn me loose from bare metal to the back end and logic - just don't ask me to pick a color scheme or do any kind of graphics works beyond basic cropping and resizing.

Well, maybe - the local place has a decent looking site BUT the back end is broken, so right up my alley... but I don't have time. Working full time, teaching 4 classes (a full time load teaching is 5 per term), taking 3 classes (a full load is 12-14 credit hours, I'm doing 9), and once in a great while actually getting to do stuff with my wife and kids.

In my humble opinion, business don't want to pay what it really costs for a good looking AND functional web site. Hence, WIX, etc.

That's because everyones uncle has a neighbor who knows a guy who works with a guy whose wifes hairdresser has an 11 year old nephew that knows HTTPL and will build the site for $25.00.

As a 20 year veteran of powerpoint...

...slides are only an illustration of your point. Using them for documentation is a mortal *(&(ing sin. A person reading your slides is not listening to you. ...and if they're not listening to you, why the heck are you there?

Yup. So my slides all have maybe a single picture and 3 or 4 words on them.

And then since I'm not actually presenting, I'm fiilling the notes view with whatever I'd be saying if I was in front of you.

Excellent....avoid becoming a Power Point Ranger.

Power Point is an extremely powerful tool if used correctly, especially in the world I work in now.

I also use the animation feature for introducing pictures. Embedded video is also key in my world.

I can't program a thermostat, btw, so I had to look up Atwood's Law. Color me stumped.

Do your programs have to run and run correctly? I would hope so? 20 or so years ago I quit teaching for an evening "adult" school since they wanted programs submitted on slides. You did not have to demo them and several students complained that running their assignments was too stressful and I was the first instructor who made them do that!!!!

Ive been known to tell my instructor that her code wont compile on my system using strict checking. And then provide a patch to her code to fix it.

General rule for all programming classes here is that if it wont compile it doesnt get graded.
