Paul Newman's Rolex Daytona sells
$17.8 million. Notice what's barely visible in the closeup picture of the watch?

Buyer wanted to remain anonymous. I would too...to avoid being laughed at.

At least Newman's Daytona is a good looking watch.

And that is why McQueen is the King of Cool and you are not.
I qualified ahead of Paul Newman at Road Atlanta. In the finals he was slotted right behind my car. Night before the race had the track painter write the name "Ben Quicker" on the back panel of my car. (Ben Quick was Newman's character in movie The Long, Hot Summer.) We broke, he won and came by our pits after the race for a beer and a laugh. Nice guy. Last edited by Borders Reivers; 10-27-2017 at 06:52 PM.. |

I can't imagine having so much disposable income that a watch that expensive would be like spending the $60 to $70 I spend every several years for a new watch.
Have 2 $800 limited edition watches that only 100 were made. But it is because I did the design and artwork for the watch and got them as payment.

Rumor has it that Rolex might have been the winning bidder.

Wow but certainly risky as an investment.
It is beautiful though.

For years people have been faking pandas , as they’re a rare watch .
HIS was like a factory modified one-of-a-kind 918 , or Carrera rsr , Carrera gt , or hand built by Ferdinand kind of thing ... It’s an extraordinary piece of watch collecting history . I’d have bought it in a flash , if only I knew it was for sale ... ![]() FOr those that don’t know (or care) try going to your local Rolex dealers to buy a stainless Daytona ... I’m out of touch these days , but you used to have to pay a deposit to get on the waiting list (about 5 years) on the off-chance the dealer would be allocated one . They’re normally sold private above retail as soon as they’re collected as people don’t want to wait .. A manufacturer artificially keeping the prices high ? Sure can, but it was allways a desirability driven market . I found a Rolex dealer who said he could get me one next day when I was working in Mumbai , I agreed to go back the next day then left and called my guy at Rolex . He said “i’ll Be looking into it , please don’t give them your money “ I suspect they weren’t a Rolex dealer shortly after

There was a time that you couldn't give one of those away. I bought one in the early 80s and they were not a popular watch. They did not have a Rolex movement in them and the movement they had was a manual wind one, which nobody liked. I had many other watches at the time and seldom wore mine.
Rolex eventually discontinued the watch. After some time had passed, collectors in Europe (predominantly Italy) started taking an interest in them. Values started to rise and when they doubled I decided to sell mine. I sold the box with the watch, but kept the papers for some reason. I felt pretty good about myself, as I had paid about $1750 for the watch and sold it for $3500. Eventually, Rolex brought out a new version of the watch and there was a renewed interest in these. It seemed that the increasing values of the older watches convinced people that they should buy one of the newer ones. The older ones doubled in value again and as each year passed, there was more interest in the new were ones and they became harder and harder to get. The older watches now command stupid prices and if you want a stainless steel version of the newer ones, be prepared to wait a very long time. I recently decided that I didn't need to have ownership papers in my safe for a watch I had sold 30 years ago. I sold them on eBay for about $750. What the new owner will do with them, I have no clue, as they were filled out in my name and the serial number of my watch was punched into the certificate in a way that can't be altered. |
