Driving through a glass shower: $10K+

On the highway going home at cruising speed (60 mph) the back window of the A4 in front of me explodes...

See the shattering followed by a wall of glass hitting my DD (2016 MKX).

The car did not stop, went to the police to make a report. Not a collision under the Ontario Highway Act so its a no fault "accident" covered by my insurance comprehensive clause... Will cost me the $300 deductible.

At first glance beside the passenger side doors, the back of the car and the rims/tires, everything else got nicked:

Windshield, hood, front valence/bumper, headlight lenses, front grills, mirrors, front fenders, driver side doors, windshield pillards, A pillards, roof pillards and so on.

Shooter? Kids throwing rocks off an overpass? What???

Not really, seem since you don't hear any noise but just get the visual it does not make you jumpy. I was surprise at my wife reaction, she did not jump she just ask what was that.

I caught up to the guy (to get his plate number) and he seem to have a large object on the back seat that might have touch the glass. It was not warm, cold or sunny at the time.

That's freaky but it could have been a lot worse... And this is one of the many reasons I run a dash cam.

Many years ago I was backing out of my driveway in my Audi 4000 on a cold morning, turned on the rear window defogger and it shattered the rear glass but it all stayed in place.

Under Ontario law, the incident as described is defined an accident. You should not have to pay your deductible and have this counted as an at-fault comprehensive claim.

You should speak to your insurance adjuster and if he/she is not willing to accept the obvious you should speak to his manager and then the insurance company's ombudsman.

My thought was if it was leased, you only need to let the insurance get it fixed properly. After the lease, give it back. I'm sure at least half of it will be repainted.

I'm sure he knew, seem pretty windy in the car. I got his plate number but it is not consider a collision so he did not have to stop. Most people would but he did.

You probably right. It won't go against my record, the Police report state "Not at fault".
