Installed Ceiling Racks Over the Garage Door This Weekend
Just showing off my weekend project.
I installed ceiling racks over the garage door this weekend. It took longer than I expected due to the measuring, locating studs, running out of batteries in my laser level, etc.. Took 6 hours total. These racks are adjustable from 17" to 48" of space between the ceiling and garage door. I only have 23" so I used the smaller brackets. However, I am going to lengthen to my maximum amount of space by cutting the longer brackets to fit. The shelves can be either 6' or 8' bt due to the location of my rafters, I could only do 6'. This will really be helpful by getting al lot of less-used stuff off the floor (i.e., ice chests, tires, spare 911 rear window, etc....I have too much stuff). The quality of these racks is very nice. However, I wish that they had sides that keep items from falling off. I'm going to add boards on the back and sides. The last thing I want is an ice chest sliding off onto my car. ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by Tidybuoy; 11-13-2017 at 01:52 PM.. |

Vern,
Sweet looking project. Those work well in areas like yours with minimal height. The place we moved to has a 14’ ceiling in the garage just past the end of the garage door tracks and I went a bit more extreme to use the height I had available. I buried a 6x6 fence post in the side walls and built a 5 ply beam across the entire width. I’ve got a 16’ x 9’ mezzanine I have quite loaded up. ![]() ![]() |

Maybe check out what I did with my opener. Frees up more space above the door for storage racks.
The opener is very, very quiet. See page 2. I Need to Replace my Garage Door and Opener
