i broke the unbreakable. Le Creuset dutch oven.

i'm shocked.

most sundays, i cook a big batch of food to hand out to my single elderly neighbors. they always tell me it is difficult to "cook for one". (they dont like each other, so they couldnt possibly do a round-robin meal exchange..noooo)

yesterday, i made Sunday Gravy. damn, my house smelled like the movie set of the Sopranos. (not a murder scene). when done, i lightly dressed some pasta with the sauce and put a big glop on top. boxed it all up in togo containers i bought awhile back. we handed them out.

at home doing the dishes, i noticed i somehow CHIPPED the bottom of my enamel dutch oven. WTF? two chips. both the about the diameter of a half pea. deep chips. i immediate made the rounds again to show the pot to the neighbors. i HAD to warn them of the missing chips. they could be in their meals. i felt like an idiot.

i was more worried about someone swallowing a chip. i'll offer the pot to a friend who owns a english mastiff. maybe he could use a dog bowl the beast cant push around the house while eating. i broke the unbreakable. must have been the metal tongs or something. i'm not going to use it anymore. i dont want to chip a person's tooth or anything worse.

i'm gonna try Staub next. i like the already black interior..which my LC has from baking bread in it.

My wife tells me that there’s le creuset and then there’s Chinese made le creuset.

She seems to mention it every year about this time.

I have an old (from my parents) cast iron Griswold dutch oven. My dad's since the 30's. He used it on hunting trips. Even has the biscuit pan. legs for siting over coals, dished lid for placing coals on top.

No, you can't have it.

We have a bunch of Le Crueset, but I just bought Staub for the first time for a gift. Wife found out its made in China, so its going back to W&S

I'm sure not all of it is made in China, though.

Have never used a metal tool inside of one of those. That's why they make tools from wood...

Bummer about the dutch oven. Those are about 300 bucks.

Le Creuset cast iron has a lifetime warranty on it. Take it to a store or outlet and exchange it for another.

We have an assortment of LC items (5-20 years old) and they remain amazing. Always cooked over gas and after 6 months or so they start looking scruffy. Take too them with a scrub pad and mild cleaner and they look new again. The only thing that failed so far is a black plastic lid handle. Bought a replacement at W&S and was back in business. When I was a bachelor my parents give me a set of Chantal pots and pans - those still look great too but don't cook as well as the LC.

LC sells metal/(stainless?) handles to replace the black handles that they come with. I think they are a little pricey. You could probably also buy a metal drawer pulls from HD or Lowes for the same purpose.

Unfortunately, the same applies to Staub.

If its below $100 for a small one, its made in China.

You want my metal pot lid handle?

My pot is a factory second. No warranty.

My wife still hasn't forgiven me for the last time I broke out a Dutch Oven. I hope your elderly neighbors are more forgiving

I used my Griswald Dutchie in the Smoker for some smoked ranch style beans. Heeee Hawww.

At the end I put the Dutchie on top of the fire box with the lid to create a nice thick bean sauce. That along with 3 racks of baby backs and 2 racks of Beef Short Ribs....ohhhh
