Okay I understand all this "we are an internet community" stuff and it is a nice personal touch when someone posts a quick note about their significant other, their job, their pets, etc.
However ultimately this is a board about cars, sponsored by a company that sells automotive parts.
I'm sure there are many BBS's where debate you political alliances.
I know there are BBS's where you can discuss your religious beliefs.
We all know there is plenty of porn on the internet if that is what you want to look at or talk about.

Do you go to an auto parts store to buy underwear?
Do you go to a pet store to buy an oil filter?

There is an old adage that goes something like "at parties or family a get together don't discuss religion or politics"
I'm pretty sure overkill never though that his post about going to war would lead to several pages liberal Vs conservative name calling, But what did it accomplish? The liberals and the conservatives still blame each other for everything that is wrong with the world and the politicians are loving it because it keeps anyone from noticing what a terrible job they are doing. "We have met the enemy, and they is us"

So I have this nutty idea that maybe we should try to keep most of our discussions here about cars.

Oh and I DO appreciate the irony that I am posting an OT thread complaining about OT threads... but then I never claimed to be the brightest bulb on the tree!

I think a little OT on the BBS now and again is a good thing - provided it does not get out of hand. A little levity/humor/personal anecdotes from time to time lightens things up a bit.

We can't talk about timing belts and clutches and faulty fuel pressure regulators all the time.

Personally I do not see the harm in it as long as it is kept to a reasonable level (emphasis on reasonable). If I am uncomfortable about the topic, or it doesn't interest me, I don't reply to it (note my one reply in the political thread)

911 BBS is a lot stricter on OT than here - then again they get a lot more posts.

I think OT ranting, whether it be politics or not, strengthens the community not sperates it and since theres kind of a tightness to this BBS..I think its totally acceptable...It should be left alone until someone starts crying...we can count on the liberals for that..hahahah JOKING....

Certainly! I tried to word my little rant such that it is fun to find what other common ground we have with other automotive enthusiast.

I'm just saying (not that what I say amounts to a hill of beans) some people take the internet too seriously... and some people take this BBS too seriously... and maybe when it starts getting into derogatory terms and hurt feeling we could show a little more restraint. It is also sometimes evident that it is easy to forget common social graces i.e. you may say things sitting at a keyboard that you would not say to someone face to face.

Enough philosophy... I'm going over to look at the butt shot Todwics babe posted again.

Scott: As you know, we move 99% of the OT posts over to the OT Dungeon.
The OT - Political thread was left here for now because I was hoping that the heated debate would be resolved. Honestly, when it was first posted, I choose not to view or move it. (Something about needing to get some work done here at work! :D ) By the time I got to that thread, it had snowballed into quite a big mess. Again: by then, I felt it was better to leave it here until the issues between people were resolved.
Had I moved it to the OT forum, many would not have read the rest of it, including my warnings to calm down.

That said, that particular thread will be moved shortly...as well as this post. :)

Ummm, first the issues in the political post cant be resolved until this whole war thing is all over. I created that thread because I was nervous and i wanted to talk about it. I dont know about you guyz but I like you all!!! I think I talk and spend more time with you guyz then I do with anyone else!!! You guyz are almost like family. After creating that thread and being edumakatd about whats going on I FEEL ALOT BETTER!!! You fear what you dont know. Now that I know I am not all that scared anymore, I mean I am but hardly. Ya know what scares me? We call this a community! Maybe I'm old foggie but my idea of a community is a group of people who visit each other where they live, have meals together, go to the bar for a few beers together, get together at the park for a BBQ, watch the game together, people who know what each other look like, sound like, even smell like.

This is a great place to exchange information, make contacts, and plan events. although it is just a bulletin board after all isn't it? That is what it is literally called right?

Do we consider a bulletin board at the Laundromat, supermarket, or dorm a community?

yeah more porn!!....but seriously, I really enjoy some off topic stuff in between all the serious posts, it keeps things interesting, yet doesn't usually get too out of hand as to distract too much from the cars which is why we are here. And I do consider this a community, even though it's just a message board...it is an internet community.

You aren't forced to come here and post or read others posts. I hope no one has offended you, but I think an occasional OT post is fun. I don't however think we should start discussing Joe Millionaire.

I don't think so. Threads containing pornographic content will be deleted, and those involved with such posts will be banned. Also: posts that deal with illegal activites like copyright infringement, how to make a bomb...etc. will also be dealt in the same fashion.

That is not a threat, it is a promise. Porn has NOT PLACE here. It is illegal to post porn on such a public forum, and you can get into legal troubles as well. Not to mention the fact that minors have access to these pages: please protect them!

This is not a joke. I am not a strict moderator: I let lots of things slide, but when it comes to stuff like porn & illegal activities: that will not be tolerated. Believe me, Wayne doesn't want to have to deal with legal matters concerning this stuff: it would be a waste of time and money that can be better spent on PelicanParts and this board.

I lurk on this board, and have caught unsolicited political attacks from time to time, usually having nothing to do with the topic at hand. I think some topics are better off not being brought up at all. Religion and politics, specifically, come to mind. These discussions usually turn into kindergarten shouting matches with ideologues over-simplifying complex issues into soundbytes they heard on their favorite extremist radio shows or websites. There is almost nothing to be gained from the discussion, except, perhaps, to see who not to listen to anymore. There is a time and place for such discussions, but in my opinion, it has no place on this or any other automotive-related message board.

Look, I just thought it was funny that he included porno in his contention pertaining to keeping this bbs on topic, because of the fact that I fail to see that as being an everyday problem here.

Do you delete pornographic pictures on a daily basis? For some reason the comment struck me as being funny at the time. Maybe I was in a weird mood.

eligunn: He was not making a legal threat. There are certain things that cannot be permited to be posted because it opens up the "owner" of the BBS to legal action. (Sad to say but it we are a litigation prone society now) This BBS provided free to us - in return there are a few rules we have to follow.

Z-Man: I do think he was being facetious about bringing on the porn.

Sometimes I think we need a collective enema.

Hopefully some of you have read my other posts know that I try to interject some humor into my posts and there was a certain amount of sarcasm intended in my first presentation.

I used the porn comparison because I though it would make a obvious example of things that are not/should not be brought out here.(I'm 99% sure the other porn references were made in jest)

I think if you read my first statement carefully I never specifically said all OT stuff is bad, heck I have been know to contribute to more than a few OT's here.

I guess if I wanted to be more exact I was suggesting it might be a good idea to avoid politics and religion because they are such sensitive subjects. People are killing each other every day over politics and religion for heavens sake.

On a much more minor level I have reason to believe that some people were offended by the recent political debate to the point that they have left the board.

I enjoy the OT forums,

First, I can go to other forums where the opinions are heavily sided towards the forums collective agenda - some good reading but very one sided.

Second, most people posting to this BBS are Porsche owners. That being said, it takes a certain individual to be a Porsche owner. Myself, I am a dreamer, a goal setter and high achiever. I have always enjoyed meeting other Porsche owners, for the most part. Therefore, I find it very interesting to read the free spirited un-biased opionions of other Porsche owners.

I am also impressed with Z-mans posts as a moderator - seems like a very fine young man - got some good things going for ya, good luck with it all. (You've got some guts letting some of these threads go ..... I like a Christian man with guts!)

Here's where ya lost me. I don't think Z-man is young (don't know for sure, but I'd place a wager on over 38) or fine. Although I don't know him personaly, IRL he may be totally different, he's probably not a devout christian like you seem to think, nor does he seem to have any moxie, to speak of. Hey Tabs. I've just bought 23,000 shares in Lithium Technology Corporation, which is a company that does reaserch on making batteries for horrible little electric cars and the such like. Plus batteries for future mobile phones and laptops. They were cheap and the company is right up there in lithium knowlegde and development. I feeel I'll probably loose the money but if I don't I'll do extremely well. What are you thoughts?

Is it a penny stock listed on the NASDQ pink sheets....if you see a profit sell and get the initial investment back. If U can put a standing sell order if it goes to a certain level to limit your loses. Problem with penny stocks is that you never know the what they are really selling for...information is old and they can be very illiquid. They can very easily be subject of manipulation.

Sounds like a good area of investment though...

I'm in it for the long haul. Long hall as far as tech' is concerned ;) The way electric cars are going and this companys developments, it has a chance of doing very well so i'll just hold off until the company's gone bust or the shares are worth good money.

I always back on outsiders. Plus I love cheap shares as they fluctuate up and down by 20% so a bit of volitivity is good.

They are on the Nasdq as LITH if you are curious.

I'd bet $100 that the Zman is a great guy, who lives Life to the fullest, he's not a taker, but a giver. Probably around 27 - 31 years old - youngster to me/ hah ha. He is probably very grounded and good willed; a leader and a follower; a friend to many. He's probably not married, but when he does get married, he will have a happy wife and a successful family.

I said that. I was merely suggesting that failing is not something that has to be taught, it just comes 'round like the flu. Re examining where you went wrong, not doing that part of your route to reach your goal and taking a side road that gets you to the same goal w/o repeating mistakes is all I was suggesting.

Well, you're right there, but I never said anything against my wife, and I certainly wouldn't say anything diparaging towards or aboot yours. I was merely remarking on someting that you cannucks probably don't have to deal with as much as we do. Children being raised to not listen to thier mothers, fathers, niehgbors, or teachers. I like to make people laugh, I try to put others before me. I may be uptight and anal sometimes, but I believe I am open minded about most things. (Like stuff that's posted here!) Not sure where you're getting the resentful idea, but I'm not a resentful person.

Thanks Rob. Say more things like that & I'll be MORE egotistical than todwic implies! Sometimes I don't have enough guts as a believer in Christ. But I feel it is important NOT to FORCE my opinion on others. I enjoy discussing different belief systems, and hopefully I can portray my Christ as accurately as I can. This is the OT Dungeon um, forum, that is, not the Z-man's Dungeon, after all! :)

So, who am I? I'm 35, married for almost 9 years to the love of my life: Kim. No kids yet. I'm a youth group counselor at my church. In the past, I've been involved with short term missions (Costa Rica, South Africa, Liberia, Hungary, Sweden). By most measurements, I am a conservative person. Yes: I am a born-again Christian.
Do I live life to the fullest? I try to! (Read: IF by Rudyard Kipling: it describes my life very well) I do enjoy living life, and experiencing as much of life as possible! I've done stuff like snowboarding, travelling (see above), I've owned a motorcycle, and these days, I get my jollies by driving around a racetrack! I have yet to do skydiving, but it's on my list of things to do!
Todwic: I did the club scene for a little time years ago, (ref to your rage/estacy stuff) but didn't enjoy it: probably 'cause I'm too self-consious when I dance! :eek: But I enjoy much of the 'mainstream' trance/rave groups out there, like Apopgyma Bezerk, Telepopmusic, Moby, Tangerine Dream...etc. The music without the drugs: a wonderful concept! :)

I'm very involved with PCA right now: I'm on my region's board of governors and hold the "track tech co-chair" position. I truly enjoy the club and know that Porsche ownership goes far beyond just owning car!

I still don't understand your resentment towards me, Todwic, but I guess you can't please everyone all the time....

While you may be a great judge of character, you can't tell ages for squat. (I'm not calling you Dirt in a dusty sense, just that's what you're older than. All this angst was started with the thread where Frank B. asked for some advice, for the second time the info was in the owners manual, and Britwrench advised him that the purchase of such a manual would be beneficial. Not those exact words. Frank responded by suggesting that Brit was a recepticle for a female hygene solution. Said it pretty meanly, too. A couple of other members of the board tolk Frankie that wasn't so nice, and sometimes we have to share the sandbox with others who aren't as intellectualy tuned as others, but brit had his system well mantained and would be servicable, if a bit finicky in the low end rpm zone. Here again, I didn't read the whole post, and when I say Frank slamming brit, I lashed out (tho a lot nicer to him than I was to Z) making desparaging remarks about his geneology, mental capacity, and choice of lingo, while defending Brit capacity as a great source of 411. I didn't know Frank from adam, but seeing as he was from Philly, I made references about Italians and possible mob connections. Turned out, Frank and brit had already kissed and made up (I HOPE that's what they were doing there), and that Frankie's Grandfolk came from Scicily. Not too far from Italy, as I recall. racial slurs were handed back and forth (good naturedly, this time, wholey tongue in cheek), and some pansy whiner mama's boy got his feel bads hurt and complained, and Zman steped in, said it wouldn't be tolerated, with the name calling and such, and deleted the thread, and threated to boot me off the board. Well, I took it personaly, and wrote a very, very long post about how we should get thicker skins and how french people suck and nobody can take a joke-a-la-the Diceman anymore, and how if he was gonna throw his wieght around like that, then just go ahead and boot me, nancy boy. I wrote all of this before I realized the post was closed and the 40 min I had spent composing one of the greatest (IMHO) retort/rebuttle/slam/take this job and shove it-esque peices ever written was just pissed away. and to not be retrieved ever, and one of the most eloquent PG-13 verbal tirades of Western Civilization was lost forever. I hit the submit reply button and went to go get my wife (Traci) to show her one of my finest literical creations ever, and there was the "you can't post that crap here" error messages awaiting my return, wife a-tow.<p>And so, that is the real reason I've been just waiting for even half a chance to unload on Z-man. When I saw his remark to Ahmet about power, I detonated. I vented. I, sir, raved. I, raver. And after I was done, I felt silly, embarassed, and I really wanted to just delete the post and forget this ugly incident of short temperedness. (I'm Irish, it's not me fault, the lads talked me into it) Instead, I let it stand, to remind myself that tirades make for hurt feelings and dead kittens. That was a few days ago, and today, I sincerely feel bad that I said those things about Z-man, he didn't deserve them, and he is just doing his job. (my remarks about Canadians stand tho, you gotta draw the nice line somewhere, and mine starts north of America. (Canadian Customs kicked me out of Canada, I wasn't allowed there. Yes I hold gruges, nevermind that is was a good call on thier part) Again, Z-man, moderator, I say "I'm sorry", I'm just a petty short tempered man who lashes out at things that would be better brought close and bought beverages.
