hostile workplace, HR, mgmt, and consultants oh joy!

So.. my boss was hit with a "hostile workplace" claim by 2 employees with 3 charges total, after 5 months of HR review, one charge stuck of "favoritism" because the boss went kayaking a couple of times with one of my coworkers.

So now, we are having a 6 hour meeting with consultants on Friday, the last day of work before the college closes for 2 weeks. A day I'm typically very busy, and when the work is done we all leave early.

I was sent a non-anonymous survey today (have to authenticate to access it) by a consulting group that HR hired, and I don't particularly agree with their privacy policy and security policy and completing it shows that I accept the policies. So I'm not completing it - although I was asked verbally to do it by close of business tomorrow (NOT by my boss or anyone in HR) and the email I got from the consultants asked for it to be completed before Jan 1.

I did look at a coworker's survey, and all the questions are about "your team". Well, our department has 4 distinct groups, and they didn't define "team" for me. Yet another reason to not complete the survey.

Friday will be fun - I love the folks I've worked with for 20 years, but the two newest hires (about 3 years ago) have destroyed my department's reputation on campus, and have tried to poison relationships in our department.

I don't do "team building exercises", I don't play silly games at the work place, I don't do personality tests, I don't do departmental retreats, etc.

How much of a polite, professional ******* should I be on Friday?

Ugh! That doesn't sound like any fun at all. Yeah, be professional, uber professional, and be correct about things like the privacy and security policies in an obstructive way. Have a little fun with it, but make sure that you are 100% correct and they can't come back on you with anything.

Oh, and this whole thing apparently got started because a 45 year old "man" was upset that he wasn't invited to someone's birthday lunch celebration (a few from our department went, and several from other departments housed in our building).

Is there a woman (or man I guess) he groped recently?

A 45 year old douche who is butt hurt over a perceived snub would not have lasted 3 years much less 3 months in any organization I've been a part of.

They put the kabosh on birthday lunches years ago. Went so far as to make your birthday one of your paid vacation days that you must take to keep from having birthday lunches of any sort.

Working for the state government (or an agency of the state government) there is no way to regulate our lunch times or off work times - that whole "freedom of association" thing in the constitution

And I get a week off for my birth day most years - with pay. College closes for Spring Break

Hopefully, if things get sideways, you have people skills G**D*** it or a clever invention to fall back on.

A lot of administrative sorts are short-sighted, CYA, attorney wannabee's and CEO wannabee's who's primary job is second-guessing people doing real work while advancing bottom line mentality. When it all goes sideways, call in consultants who know exactly who made the call and who will serve as a referral. It all makes employees wacko in their dissonance.

A consultant is a guy who knows 100 different ways to make love, but doesn't know any women.

Consultants are a mixed bag. Sometimes they get stuck on projects that they are not qualified for through no fault of their own. The companies behind them are f*rking vultures. We had a couple great consultants on our team. Lost to budget cuts. They are sorely missed.

Oh know, this isn't a specialized domain consultant, etc. like you are used to. Work place relationships and team building.

I think you should stick to your guns and get a clarification of the privacy policy and a definition of "team" before completing the survey.

A consultant saved my behind. I ran our 12 person home office like a family, birthday lunches, parties for every holiday, flex time, etc. I tried to make it fun to work there. The consultant said we were too familiar, and it was just a matter of time before someone turned on us big time. On his recommendation I gradually changed a bunch of policies, but not soon enough. Sure enough, someone got their nose out of joint and quit, claimed she was fired, her lawyer came back with a list of "unprofessional behaviors," (having office party when she was on vacation ), but most of them had been eliminated by the new employee policies the consultant recommended.

Got confirmation - they define "team" as the other group as well as our group.

So I completed the survey enough to say that I've completed it, but no real data provided (middle choice on all likert scale questions)

And apparently I get to meet with the consultants for a one-on-one about "our team" Friday morning first thing.
