new TV's suck

yea I said it.
got a new 65in Samsung.
the picture is so good movies don't look "real" anymore.
harry potter was the first thing we saw on it, my daughter likes it, and you could really tell that the room in the house was a set instead of looking like a real room on our old plasma TV.

that's not what really yanks my chain.
THERE IS NO FLIPPIN ANALOG AUDIO OUTPUT!!!!

my wife bought me headphones because I am deaf in one ear and now I cant use them. there is a digital audio out but I am not sure I can use it because the setting on the TV says "speakers out" or "digital out". if I select digital the speakers no longer work.
I have not bought a digital to analog converter yet, I am afraid it will just be a waste of money.
I also use to run the audio to my stereo for the rare occasion I would turn it on.

we also have a WI and I don't think that will work as the wi uses the 3 RCA cables.

its like when computer manufactures eliminated floopy drives and 9 pin ports. hey, I work for the govt and we still have floppies and no computers with drives.
if I pull a file from the radar system(FAA) it goes on a floppy, then I have to find the ONE computer in the building that has a drive. then I have to put it on a memory stick to put it on my computer. don't laugh, we still use DAT's and I know if one computer that runs on DOS and has no hard drive, the program runs off of a floppy.

oh yea, new TV's suck.

not ranting, just bored at work.

You are officially a COB (crusty old bastid) in training. Keep it up to eventually gain full membership.

I understand. You work things out as you like them..then damn technology changes and rather than your life being improved, it has more hassles added.

Close captioning on?
My 65in tv is never on without the stereo playing the audio...much better than the tv speakers.

Did you happen to get it at a Best Buy store?
I'd highly recommend you get the Geek Squad to come out and dial in your picture for you.
My wife and daughter got that service when they surprised me with a new Sony 52" a number of years ago. Prior to the dialing in, I couldn't stand watching it. Everything looked like a soap opera. Football stadiums looked REALLY green too.
After they came and dialed in the picture all has been good.
I run my tv thru the stereo too. Wife hates it because of the surround sound system but it's great for movies. I can shake the house down if I'm not careful.

If you or one of the grandkids go into the menu part of the TV it has a "video" selection and you (or them) can adjust the strength of the picture such as Dynamic, Standard, Natural, Relax, Movie, Entertain. These are for how hard the TV works the screen for various types of inputs. The picture also depends on what you have for an input such as Cable, Uverse, ETC as they will show the same items differently.

Remember TV sets in a store are setup to counter the effects of those overhead lights.

My wife has totally embraced all forms of electronic entertainment, and sits in front of our 55" Samsung, with her laptop open on her lap, her phone in her hand, and her Ipad off to the side. She records everything, so not one single commercial can be watched (hell, I can't even get up to get a drink), and hates it when I want to watch a ball game, or race, and has to suffer through the commercials.

Even when she isn't at home in the evening, I can't watch anything that isn't being taped on her list, because the programmed unit will only record 2 shows. You can't turn the channel from either of these shows, and can only watch some pre-taped, or something that is "on-demand", (but then you can't fast forward through the commercials), you should see how mad she gets when I cancel her taping and watch a car show !

I am anti-technology, and have no problem only seeing a few shows per week, but she has already consumed those time slots, arghhhh !

Yeah, it drives me nuts. It is due to the higher refresh rates and frame-rate interpolation/smoothing on newer TVs.
Most TVs will have settings to let you dial them down, so the picture is less "soap opera" like.

Most people these days sell 6-10 different levels of TV. The lower levels usually don't have as many inputs and outputs as the upper levels. I used to buy partially based on having checked the I/O options on the back. These days, it doesn't matter as much for me any more. Does the TV support bluetooth?

What they are saying is the sharpness, contrast, and color can be turned up too far making the picture unrealistic. Especially on the newer higher resolution TVs.

Always have TV sound going thru the stereo for surround sound. Nobody except for me can turn it off!

If I were going to setup headphones I would do it using the A B settings of my stereo and use bluetooth to run the headphones. That way could could listen to A speakers, B headphones, or Both. And bluetooth headphones typically have their own volume controls.

My TV is a 6 year old Sony Bravia smart TV. All of the smart tv functions have quit working and Sony no longer supports them. *#$^!!@@!

My primary complaint about new tv's, everything looks like a soap opera. Can't watch it.

Have found the picture preset that works best is the Gaming setting.

You want one that softens things a bit so you have depth of field.

See post #8.

There should be separate settings to adjust the refresh rate and/or interpolation ("smoothing" effect) to get things back to normal with no "soap opera" effect.

I went to a store over ten years ago and they had the 2004 Blu-Ray Van Helsing movie playing.

I could see what T77 is talking about back then. It wasn't soap opera like, it was the CGI imperfections that were very perceptible. $3,500 TV where a good Sony was $2,200.

Fast forward five years in Sam's Club/Best Buy looking at a big, fast refresh rate tv and the soap opera look was present and freaky.

Throw in a Little Rascals DVD and see if it screws that up. That'll be the acid test.

There are some settings like “soap opera effect” and “sports” and “3D” that you can turn off and get that weird looking crap to go away. It’s in there - you just have to find it.

There's a setting on most TV's that prevent this weird picture.

On mine its like "240Mhz" something or other. I hate that depth distortion. Its always been off.

I think on Samsung it is "Automotion Plus". Turn it off and see what you think.

I just wish I could buy a TV that would last a year. My M-class (midrange) Visio is less than a year old and has frequent glitches with the picture and audio drop out. When it's working correctly, it's beautiful. The Grand Tour in 4K looks incredible.

Btw, for most mainstream TVs you can find the review on CNet including calibration notes. This is to some extent room specific but gets you closer to a good picture than simply using the default modes.

It was only $300 or so back when I got mine.

As the tech explained it to me, all the TV's come into the stored cranked way up so they'll look good in the store environment. Since the mfg's don't know which set will be picked for demo purposes, they do it to all of them at the factory.

You might try googling 'Preferred settings for _________" and put in your make/model of set. I went here: https://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/sony-kdl-52xbr9-picture-settings-341861/
for my set just to see how the numbers compared to what the Geek set up.

I also went there to set up my wife's TV in the family room, as it had the same problem but she wasn't willing to spend the money on the Geed Squad for it. Their numbers made it reasonable to watch that TV.

Good luck as there's nothing worse than spending good money and not enjoying it.

I know.

Problem is you go to other peoples houses and they have NOT adjusted it and are afraid to or think they are supposed to like it the way it is.
