An old VW at Pebble Beach Concours?
I asked on the Samba but they don't get much traffic over there. Would the people who run the Pebble Beach Concours even consider letting a very nice 1950 split window beetle infiltrate their lofty ranks? I've entered mine at Hillsborough and Stanford and was pleasantly surprised at the smiles and positive vibes I got from the rich dudes with their fancy Ferraris and Aston Martins. After all, half of them drove an old beetle in high school.
Should I even bother applying? I'm not even sure there's a class for me. Perhaps preservation class, as the car has never undergone a full restoration and has barely been touched since the early '60s.

How much does it cost to apply?
But, I guess if you have to ask that question you haven’t poured enough into your restoration to be accepted.

Gotta say no.
Went in '95 and there were Hispano-Suizas, for example. Several. I have videos of a '48 Ferrari firing up. I was grossly under-dressed with a nice Porsche t-shirt while rubbing shoulders with big name celebs. (I mean I walked by them). The feature marque at the Monterey Historics was Lotus that year. I don't remember seeing one at Pebble Beach. What I do remember about the week was after a day at the Italian Concours, Porsche's looked like Chrysler K cars.

An auto show where I'm to be concerned as to how I'm dressed? I don't need to be in the company of pompous asses to see great cars, thank you.

Denis,
No I've never been to car week in Monterey, but I've seen plenty of pics and coverage of the awards for various classes, and it's all very nice. Snooty doesn't work for me in the least, however. I grew up going to Hershey with my dad, and the various other shows that he took his cars to. You know, back when the hobby was just a hobby, before infusions of cubic dollars took over. Call me jaded if you will.

I've only ever gone up for the Monterey Historic races @ Laguna Seca but I see all the fancy people in town. It's a show. One weekend and then back to reality, if you can call L.A. reality. The Historic races and the pits are one of the best things a car nut could ever do. Sensory overload, like going to Florence and looking at art.

I may have seen on TV that you have to be invited to the one at Pebble Beach.
I’m sure there are other events at Monterey Car Week where you just need to register... |

This is my beetle. Pastel Green. It hasn't been touched since 1963. It was in heated storage for 50 years. I'll be buffing the paint soon to get it looking all shiny again.

My neighbor has a split window sitting in his garage and has been for some number of years. It's in really good condition from the times I've been over there. I've told him he should sell it, but he's like a lot of the rest of us.

I doubt there is a class for that car at Pebble Beach and, yes, you do have to be invited.
It’s a great event and the cars you see there are second to none. I know a guy that restores one per year, just for that event only. I believe that’s all he does. I generally wear a suit and tie when attending and enjoy every minute of it. If that doesn’t suit you, well, there’s always cars and coffee somewhere. Even Jay Leno forgoes his customary jeans for a suit when he attends. If he can do it, anybody can. I have a matching pair of 50th anniversary Pebble Beach leather and wool letter jackets for sale, if you happened to miss that year. And I can also sell you a framed event poster, event program, etc. Maserati was the featured marque that year. |

They would consider it if it met there criteria.
The obvious said, I don't know exactly what their criteria is, but after seeing images for decades of the event, and the cars on display, it should be a rare car and in exquisite (not just really nice) condition. If its not nice/original/rare enough for the factory to have tracked you down to buy it back, I tend to think it would not be worthy enough.

It's to late to get into the 2019 event but here's where you can learn about entering:
https://www.pebblebeachconcours.net/entrants/entry-info.html Maybe you could request entry into class L2 but I'd think it's a real long shot. Regardless of how nice your individual car might be, it's generally not the type of car they look for. |
