Truck Owners - Bed Cargo Cases

My DD is a '14 Tacoma Crew Cab and often when I am carrying a full compliment of passengers their stuff (kids sports bags, groceries, etc.) have to go in the bed which is not an optimal solution. I don't want to fit a cover as I often haul dirt bikes and kayaks. What you guys use to secure small cargo in your truck beds?

I have been considering one of the Roll N Lock tonneau covers but those things are a bit pricey.

There are any number of solutions for tying/securing stuff: https://www.amazon.com/Gladiator-Cargo-Net-Medium-MGN-100/dp/B003ZWKH3U?psc=1&SubscriptionId=AKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q&tag=duckduckgo-ffsb-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B003ZWKH3U

I have a hard, lift up bed cover on my Tundra. I take it off maybe once every two months. It takes three minutes to take off and I lean it against the garage wall.

In between taking it off, it makes my truck much more useful: Dry storage, lockable, and clean.

Long Bed.

A question was asked about what was I trying to achieve and in short I want to temporarily secure and protect stuff (groceries, bags, gear) when the interior of my truck is full of passengers.

my friend has a nissan..the frontier or something. he is in the same boat as you. he opted for one set of side boxes from Weatherguard. he was thinking he would have room for his dirtbike. i never followed up with him.

I had a fiberglass hard cover on my last F150. On my current F150 I purchased a BakFlip three piece hard bed cover, which is a cheaper alternative to the roll up hard covers. I prefer the BakFlip because it provides the same weather and security protection as the fiberglass cover, but I can also fully fold it against the back of the cab and I have full access to the bed. The fiberglass cover can be a pain if you haul big tall stuff.

For me: Tundra...No canopy or cover as I often haul Dirt Bike, ATV or firewood.

So, I have a rubber matt and then put items in plastic bin(s) with a cover. When leaving the truck, just put the bin in the back seat area and lock the doors. Works for me.

I'm in the same boat - I just got a new GMC. My old truck has an aluminum cap but I take it off once or twice a month for large hauling.
My brother got a Soft-topper for his truck - roomier than a bed cover and it folds forward and comes off pretty easily. I'm just about convinced to do the same.

I went with a soft tri fold. soft because it's cheaper and less like to leak and tri fold because it's quicker to open partially.

OP I'd consider the roll up style since you need to fit bikes. the tri fold leaves 1/3 flat near the cab so that's not likely a good solution.

I've used a number of solutions over the years. When I had my first kid I suddenly found that the back seat was no longer useful for cargo. (Especially because the wife insisted on a full complement of baby gear for a weekend trip.

I started by buying a locking box, mounting it to a board (that fit into my bed liner), and using a bike lock to lock that to the bed.

When she insisted that we had to take a high chair, some sort of scooty toy, and an activity center in addition to a month's worth of baby clothes (for a weekend--she wasn't sure what she'd want to dress the boy in), I ended up getting tonneau cover. As I already had a tool box, it was quite a search to find one that fit.

Six years and two more kids later, we are (she is) able to pack less stuff for three kids than we were (she was) ever able to for one. And we bought a minivan.

So I am going try this. Seems to hold about four kids sports bags or lots of groceries. I need to work out a quick release system that I can also lock in place.

I use a home made tonneau cover, but takes 15 minutes to install or take off. It's not totally weather proof, fine dry snow makes it's way in there.

If I had the cash the options are limitless.

For those that don't have a tonneau cover for their truck but is looking for a great way to haul gear protected, check this out. These bins fit in the back of a short box like they were made for it. Fit's two 48 gal rubbermaid bins and two 24 gal rubbermaid bins. You can also see my rear bed rack built right off the cleats with yakima and a custom bracket.

Must have saved you a few hundred bucks doing that! I use one 18 gal rubbermaid tubgot at target and tie it to my d-rings when I go to costco.

Great Idea using 3!!

there are gate type systems that install in the bed to keep things from sliding to the cab end. varies by brand.

If you just want a box, there are several companies that make hard storage boxes that fit between the rear wheel well and tailgate. Most are hinged or otherwise articulated so that you can easily reach them. The problem with boxes along the side or back of the cab is that new trucks are all so damn tall, you just about have to climb in the bed for access.

Quote:
I've been using the system for about six months now and I have to say it fits and works fairly well. My only complaint? It was relatively expensive. Commercial bed extenders generally run in the $160 to $190 range. The extruded aluminum alone for my voluptuous rack cost me $215. And although you could argue that my time is cheap, I probably spent a solid day cutting, threading, bonding and painting my rig. You are welcome to copy the design and build one for your truck, but it won't be cheaper than Ebay.
