Still shooting and getting a little better. Generally hitting low 80% now. Shot my best today, 90, and did it shooting my dads old quail gun . It’s a model 12 built in 1941. Somewhere along the way it’s had a Simmons rib and poly choke added. First time I ever shot the gun, I think I’ll keep it. It’s a 16 guage.

Another update. I shot 92 yesterday in the Sarasota fun shoot. I thought I scored 93, that would have tied me for 1st, but the results posted showed me at 92. Maybe there was a math error.

But that is still my current best and having fun. And now I’m going out thinking I can compete. I’m now missing a target here and there instead of missing several at a particular station.

And this was again using the old model 12 pump, it was a rainy day and I shoot it just as well as my 12 guage Guerini.

I ordered new wood for the model 12 as I’ve been using a slip on pad to increase the LOP, but it slips around a bit. I’ve put about 12 coats of Tung Oil on the wood and it still is not where I want the finish to be.

Nice shooting - - that you did that with a pump is extra impressive. I'm happy if I break 50, but then I only get out once or twice a year.

As they say, it's the craftsman, not the tools. You're a craftsman.

One of the great things about living in Mississippi is that I am 5 miles up the Natchez Trace from Turcotte shooting range. It's a state-owned Sporting Clay, skeet range, trap range, rifle range, archery range, pistol range comma Etc. I think my annual membership is $20. A round of Sporting Clay is $ 12. But for that includes golf cart to ride around course. Beautiful facility. Skeet and trap is no hourly charge and only charges you $0.20 a clay. Bargain of the century. No charge for using pistol or rifle ranges.

If you have 12 coats and it’s not right, you’re doing something wrong.

I imagine so. I’m using pure Tung Oil. I started out cutting it 50% with mineral spirits per the label. Then adding more Tung per coat to thicken it out a bit. I’ve been rubbing it in and letting it set overnight. Then scuff with 600 grit and do it again. It’s close, and I’m going to give it two days to dry before the next coat.

The pores are filled, I would just like a little more sheen to it.

And my count is off a bit. More like 9 coats.

There is your problem. Tung oil doesn’t dry well. It needs a bit of poly to help it. Scuff your finish with OOOO steel wool and rub a coat or two of Tru oil in with your fingers. That will bond with the softer tung oil. And gloss up nicely

No worry, it’s tucked back in the safe now.

Thanks, if it wasn’t for your suggestion I’d still be rubbing the Tung Oil on.

Scored 90 at the fun shoot today using the model 12. I also started reloading for the 16 ga and tried them out today. I tied for 3rd.

There is also a once a month shoot that I’ve been going to. I use the 12 ga O/U there. They run your cumulative score there from month to month and I’m in 6th place. They started the year in July and I haven’t missed any, so that helps a lot.

I still have problems with certain targets. I need to go out and figure them out. One station today I only hit 3 out of 8.
