My girlfriend had prompted me to getting pack to a few long past hobbies. Modeling is one of them. I started with a semi-scale Beneteau sailboat.

Cool forum. I haven't built a model car in years but here are a couple that I have from many years ago. I also have some 1/32 scale Eldon slot cars from 1968. The bodies are very detailed and I'd like to paint the details but don't know how I would paint the trim around the windows, windshield, that sort of thing. Any tips are greatly appreciated. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...30ccb71be4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b0c2fe3d84.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...14058e0644.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...bc6ee84d14.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e8925df45b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...760bf17829.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...9c49997b24.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...69609ddf4c.jpg

It was my dream to have a IMSA 911 GTU and race Daytona-Sebring-Road Atlanta. I built this about 35 years ago. ;) |
Guillow balsa airplanes are also fun to make but take a long time.
https://www.guillow.com/Series400Kits.aspx When I’m retired I hope to have a dedicated model room/space. Not my picture, but I did make this model at some point. Destroyed by one of my kids. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1514701904.jpg |
a small selection of my 1 43 collection, I cheated as they are bought not built

I must have built over a hundred plastic models in my lifetime, a few balsa ones, a few metal ones.
Been ten years since I build a plastic one. For the past 15 years my models have been from scratch, many covered in modeling clay. I build architectural models for my business every chance I get, typically takes me longer to clean up than to build. I work really fast, but very basic mass models. I can do finish models but very few want to pay for them. Some of the last plastic models I did were of the two Horten flying wings, over $30 each about 15 years ago, the cost kind of cured me. I have a large garbage bagfull of plastic models still in their cellophane wrapped boxes waiting for me to get to them. I stopped browsing the model section of the hobby stores long ago, no longer reminder of my youth. |

You can get usable 'real' results fairly easily. You wouldn't print whole structure, but IMHO it would be useful for printing stairs, roofs, etc. Shells print fairly quickly. |

Frame assembled with CA and baking soda. It will need some extra bracing before I start painting it. Visibility is pretty poor, but I knew it would be. :) |

An old hermits cabin I made for a an HO train layout.
Doing the weathering is the fun part to me. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1514922216.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1514922245.JPG |

Experiment! |
Another old barn I did a couple years ago.....

I received a Bandai 1/144 scale AT-AT walker for Christmas. Kit absolutely fell together, without even needing much glue. Wonderfully designed kit. Tight press fit everywhere, sprue attachment points hidden on nearly every surface, just great.
Now it's on to paint. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1514986232.JPG |
awesome scene. :):)
the broken beam, and everything in the loft that is about to crush the poor car. Quote:

Yep, both those collapsing barns make me want to snatch the speedsters out of there before its to late. Great aging of the timbers and somehow they do look like big beams and planks. Excellent job!
The cobwebs are a nice touch too. Cheers Richard |
RKT, do you have a set of specialized tools that are ideal for this type of work? Clearly you have mad skills but I'm curious as to the tool set you use.
|
Thanks Guys!
I have literally hundreds of tools on my desk but I mainly use a full set of Dental tools. Scrapers and needle picks are perfect for creating the grain on the wooden beams. I also use a Dremel on slow speed with various bits. Some of the wood goes in a large baggy filled halfway with coarse sand rubbing it between my hands! Lots of experimenting over the years with some expensive tools and end up throwing things on the ground and stomping on it to get the perfect effect! |

G Scalers?
I don't know if this qualifies as 'Scale Modeling", but I have been working every weekend at my mountain home adding a "Forest Railroad" LOL. This is 'G" scale, and I have acquired some really nice 1/20th to 1/32 scale pieces.
The bridges in these photos are basically the same length. The gray trestle is 40 feet long and the aluminum "Warren/Pratt" tension cable bridge is 42 feet in span. both span across from the terrain to my first level deck that enters and exits a train station there. I designed and built each bridge modeled after various early and later engineering concepts. I haven't ballasted the track yet and have just recently completed the loop around my home. Now I need to focus on the landscaping. One of my favorite locomotives in the Accucraft Big Boy shown attached. its ~6 feet long with my auxiliary water tender. These photos were taken through out last year while it was been built. I still have a long way to go, but it has been quite fun to see some progress. I will now deliver the beer and wine to the Jacuzzi. Bob......That is extremely cool! I've always wanted to do an outdoor railway.
There is a place here in Palm Desert called the Living Desert and they have a pretty extensive system. I'm going to build some structures for them in a few months. |
WOW! Nice 4-8-8-4? and layout!
I am soooo jealous:D |
Bob,
You just blew all the others posts in this thread into the weeds. Damn what a cool project! |
Wow,
Thanks guys! Here is a couple more pictures. Look at the perspective of the big boy on the bridge. That loco is 6 feet long! I will follow up and post more as I go if you would like? I'm going to have a "Golden Spike" party soon. (Not in Utah) LOL. But to celebrate the track completed all the way around the house. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1515093263.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1515093263.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1515093263.jpg |
The locomotive is 6 feet?! So the span that it is on is on the order of 20 feet?
|
From the abutment to the tangent on the bridge is 11 feet. The total length is ~42 feet from the abutment to the deck. The Loco and tender are 55 inches and the water tender is 16".

Wow Bob, that is an AMAZING project!!!
|
inspired by Bob's trains, I went into the yard with my HO scale set.
Within seconds, the wind blew the cars across the yard! :) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1515107337.JPG |
Completely different kind of scale model, I've pre-ordered this Gundam model. I'm really excited to build this!
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1515112617.jpg |
Some really incredible stuff on this thread! I used to like model cars and planes as a kid but I’m too impatient, I always tried to assemble models with wet paint or glue. That’s when I learned that I was great with mechanical stuff but that it’s best to leave the cosmetics to the patient professionals.
|
Bob, I saw something similar to this on Vancouver Island years ago.... very cool
Cheers |
